Micheala Williams Leads Wire-to-Wire to Claim Alabama Girls State Junior Title

Micheala Williams, 2016 Alabama Girls State Junior Champion

BIRMINGHAM, AL - Final results of the 53rd Alabama Girls State Junior Championship of the Alabama Golf Association hosted by Bent Brook Golf Club in Birmingham, AL on Thursday, June 30, 2016 (16-18 & 14-15 Age Divisions: 5827 yards, par 36-36—72, 72.1/123; 12-13 Age Division: 5433 yards, par 36-36—72, 69.9/119; 9-11 Age Division (9 Holes) 2435 yards par, 36).

Holding a seven shot lead heading into the final round, Micheala Williams of Athens carded a final round three-under 69 to stave off a course record nine-under 63 by defending champion Michaela Morard of Huntsville to capture the Alabama Girls State Junior Championship by one stroke. The victory is William’s first AGA individual title but won the Alabama Women’s Four-Ball title last year with Morard at Lakewood Golf Club. Williams, heading to the University of Tennessee this fall to compete on the Lady Volunteer squad, led wire-to-wire and finished at 202 (-14) for the championship.

“It feels good to finally win”, Williams said. “I think I have missed winning this event by one at least five times”.

Morard was trying to chase Williams and stood at even par thru her first six holes today – remaining seven shots behind Williams. Morard then went on a tear playing the next seven holes at seven-under par that included an eagle and five birdies. She capped off the round with birdies on the final two holes forcing Williams to hole a three-foot par putt to win the championship.

There are four age divisions in the Girls State Junior: 14-15 & 16-18 (championship tees), 12-13 & 9-11 (shorter tees). The overall champion is the player who posts the lowest 54-hole score from either the 14-15 or 16-18 Age Divisions.  Individual age division champions will be those players who post the lowest 54-hole total within their age division.  All age divisions will play 18 holes daily, with the exception of the 9-11 that will play 9 holes daily. Champion will have her name engraved on the Bee McWane Trophy.

Alabama Girls State Junior Championship is open to any female amateur golfer who is between 9 to 18-years-old not yet in college, a legal resident of Alabama, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Alabama Golf Association (AGA) and has an active GHIN® USGA Handicap Index® at an AGA member club.
