Michaela Morard becomes youngest champion at 14 years, 7 months
CULLMAN, AL – Final results of the 26th Alabama Women’s Amateur Stroke Play Championship of the Alabama Golf Association hosted by TP Country Club in Cullman, AL on Friday, July 22, 2016 (Championship Division=5982 yards, par 36-36—72, 75.8/134; Tournament Division=4871 yards, par 36-36—72, 70.1/122).
14-year-old University of Alabama recruit Michaela Morard of Huntsville carded a final round 72 including a birdie-birdie finish to win the 26th Alabama Women’s Amateur Stroke Play Championship by three strokes over UA team member Cammie Gray of Northport. Morard was the only player to finish under par at 215 (-1) and is likely the youngest winner of this championship at 14 years, 7 months old.
"Going into 17, I said birdie will probably close it out and I hit a really great shot to a couple inches and it was the best shot I hit all week,” Morard said. "I knew my nerves were a little higher than they would be if I was on number one on the first day. I ripped my seven-wood and got on the 18th green and two putted so it was good.”
Gray, a two-time Alabama Women’s Stroke Play champion (2012-13), held a one shot lead heading into today’s final round but a four-over 76 led to a solo second place finish at 218 (+2).
Defending champion Elaine Wood of Spanish Fort carded a 77 to finish in fifth place at 227 (+11).
The Tournament Division was flighted by score for the final round. Ann Lanier of Fairhope was the first flight winner (236), Jessie Hsia of Tuscaloosa won the second flight (267) and Leslie James of Decatur took home the third flight title (291).
Alabama Women’s Amateur Stroke Play Championship is open to any female amateur golfer who is a legal resident of Alabama, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Alabama Golf Association (AGA) and has an active GHIN® USGA Handicap Index® at an AGA member club that does not exceed 36.0.
