Players Battled Through Rain and Wind During Round One
POINT CLEAR, AL - First round results of the 71st Alabama Boys State Junior Championship of the Alabama Golf Association hosted by The Lakewood Club (Dogwood) in Point Clear, AL on Tuesday, July 26, 2016 (16-18 & 14-15 Age Divisions: 6626 yards, par 36-36—72, 71.8/125; 12-13 Age Division: 5952 yards, par 36-36—72, 68.6/118; 9-11 Age Division (9 Holes) 2583 yards, par 36).
Connor Newton of Auburn fired a five-under 67 on the Dogwood course to take a two stroke lead in the 16-18 division and overall championship after the first round at The Lakewood Club. In a three-way tie for second place at 69 are Blake Schambeau of Hoover, Luke Shaw of Tuscaloosa and Tee Brown of Gadsden.
Players dealt with on-and-off rain showers and wind throughout the day making for tough playing conditions at times.
There are four age divisions in the Boys State Junior: 14-15 & 16-18 (championship tees), 12-13 & 9-11 (shorter tees). The overall champion is the player who posts the lowest 54-hole score from either the 14-15 or 16-18 Age Divisions. Individual age division champions will be those players who post the lowest 54-hole total within their age division. All age divisions will play 18 holes daily, with the exception of the 9-11 that will play 9 holes daily. After 36 holes, the 14-15 and 16-18 age divisions will be cut to the low 66 scores and ties for the final round. No cut for the 9-11 and 12-13 age divisions. Overall Champion will have his name engraved on the Art Gleason Jr. Memorial Trophy.
Alabama Boys State Junior Championship is open to any male amateur golfer who is between 9 to 18-years-old not yet in college, a legal resident of Alabama, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Alabama Golf Association (AGA) and has an active GHIN® USGA Handicap Index® at an AGA member club.
