POINT CLEAR, AL – Day one results of the 3rd Women’s Southeastern Challenge Match hosted by The Lakewood Club (Dogwood) in Point Clear, AL on Thursday, August 11, 2016 (Amateurs 6000 yards, par 36-36—72; Seniors: 5600 yards, par 36-36--72).
The third playing of the Women’s Southeastern Challenge Match took place on Thursday in Point Clear, AL at The Lakewood Club’s Dogwood course. Players endured off and on rain showers and a 1 hour 40 minute weather delay to complete day one matches.
Due to the forecasted weather conditions, tournament committee swapped formats opting to play the quicker Foursomes format in the morning and shortening the afternoon Four-Ball session to 9-hole matches due to daylight.
One point separated first and last place following the morning Foursomes session with Georgia scoring 6.5 points, Alabama with 6.0 points and Florida with 5.5 points.
Georgia claimed 4 out of 9 possible points in the afternoon Four-Ball session. Alabama and Florida each posted 2.5 points.
Georgia leads with 10.5 points, Alabama in second with 8.5 points and Florida in third with 8.0 points.
36 points are on the line during the Friday three-ball singles matches that will determine this year’s champion. Florida won the previous two contests held in 2012 and 2014. The host site and state rotates with Florida scheduled to host in 2018 and Georgia in 2020.
Women’s Southeastern Challenge Match, a biannual event, format consists of 18 holes of match play with Four-Ball, Foursomes, and three-ball (singles) match play sessions. Four-Ball session was shortened to 9-hole matches due to limited daylight. Each match is worth 1 point. Half point to each side for a tie. Each state competes against the other two states in an equal number of matches. This invitation only event is comprised of a select group of eight female amateurs and four female seniors (age 50+) selected by each state golf association.
