CC of Mobile Hosts Alabama State Mid-Amateur September 23-25

BIRMINGHAM, AL (September 20, 2016) - The Country Club of Mobile will host the 28th edition of the Alabama State Mid-Amateur Championship for the second time when it’s played September 23-25, 2016. The club previously hosted in 2006 with Will Swift of Hoover winning the title.

85 players are in this year’s field. Multiple past champions are scheduled to compete including Richard Jeffers of Mobile (2004) who just advanced to the round of 32 at the U.S. Senior Amateur in St. Louis this week. Other past champions include: Alabama USGA Men’s State Team member Matt Johnson of Dothan (2011), Alabama USGA Men’s State Team captain Steve Hudson of Birmingham (2010, 12), two-time champion Will Swift of Hoover (2006, 07), and Vic Kyatt III of Birmingham (2014).

Defending champion Jeff Taylor of Montgomery will not defend the title he won last year at his home course, Wynlakes Golf & Country Club. Taylor led wire-to-wire to finish at 211 (-5) three strokes ahead of Shaw Pritchett of Montgomery and Freeman Fite of Anniston.

Championship format is 54 holes of stroke play with a cut after the second round to the 60 lowest scores, plus ties, for the final round. Awards will be given to the five lowest scores of the tournament. The champion will have his name engraved in the Elbert S. Jemison Jr. Trophy that is housed at the AGA office and receives a ten year exemption into the Alabama Men’s State Amateur Championship. Top 10 finishers will receive an exemption into the 2017 Alabama Men’s State Amateur Championship at Bent Brook Golf Club in Bessemer.

The Donald Ross designed course will play at 6740 yards and to a par of 71 for the championship.

Alabama State Mid-Amateur Championship is open to any male amateur golfer who has reached his 25th birthday by September 23, 2016, is a legal resident of Alabama, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Alabama Golf Association (AGA) and has an active GHIN® USGA Handicap Index® at an AGA member club that does not exceed 8.4.

About the Alabama Golf Association (AGA)
