Hoover's Clay Guerin Takes a Four Shot Lead into the Final Round
MOBILE, AL - Second round results of the 28th Alabama State Mid-Amateur Championship of the Alabama Golf Association hosted by the Country Club of Mobile in Mobile, AL on Saturday, September 24, 2016 (6748 yards, par 35-36—71, 72.1/123).
Clay Guerin of Hoover fired a four-under 67 to take a four shot lead heading into the final round of the 28th Alabama State Mid-Amateur Championship at the Country Club of Mobile. His round included six birdies offset by two bogeys. He stands at 135 (-7) with 2014 champion Vic Kyatt III of Birmingham as his nearest chaser at 139.
Only four players are under par after 36 holes. Joining Guerin and Kyatt is Alabama USGA Men’s State Team member Matt Johnson of Dothan at 140 (-2) and 2009 champion Robert Nelson of Fairhope at 141 (-1).
The field of 82 players was cut to the low 60 scores and ties for the final round. The cut line fell at 161 (+19) with 63 players advancing to Sunday’s final round.
Awards will be given to the five lowest scores of the tournament. The champion will have his name engraved in the Elbert S. Jemison Jr. Trophy that is housed at the AGA office and receives a ten year exemption into the Alabama Men’s State Amateur Championship. Top 10 finishers will receive an exemption into the 2017 Alabama Men’s State Amateur Championship at Bent Brook Golf Club in Bessemer.
Alabama State Mid-Amateur Championship is open to any male amateur golfer who has reached his 25th birthday by the first day of the championship, is a legal resident of Alabama, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Alabama Golf Association (AGA) and has an active GHIN® USGA Handicap Index® at an AGA member club that does not exceed 8.4.
