Alabama Golf Association Announces 2017 Tournament Schedule

Riverchase Country Club in Birmingham will host Alabama State Senior Four-Ball in October

BIRMINGHAM, AL (March 30, 2017) – The Alabama Golf Association (AGA), now in its 102nd year of conducting state championships for amateur golfers and AGA members, has announced the sites and dates for its 2017 slate of championships and USGA national championship qualifiers.

This year, the AGA will conduct 31 tournaments including: 12 championships, six championship qualifiers, 10 USGA national championship qualifiers, two team match events, and field a team to represent Alabama at the USGA Women’s State Team Championship.

The 2017 championship season kicks-off with the 35th Alabama State Four-Ball Championship at Saugahatchee Country Club in Opelika. Shortly thereafter from May 19-21, the top senior men in the state will compete at Hoover Country Club in Hoover for the 20th Alabama State Senior Amateur title.

The AGA's flagship event, the Alabama Men’s State Amateur Championship, will be contested for the 101st time on June 8-11 at Bent Brook Golf Club in Bessemer. Opening in 1988, Bent Brook boasts 27 holes of championship golf that will be sure to test the best amateurs in the state. Six sectional qualifiers are schedule throughout the state for non-exempt players to earn a spot in the championship field. A Saturday qualifier will be held this year for the first time at Woodward Country Club in Bessemer on May 20 to assist individuals that may not have the ability to compete on a weekday.

The 17th Alabama State Match Play will be played under a new format this year when contested at Wynlakes Golf & Country Club in Montgomery from August 3-6. Competitors will now play 36 holes of stroke play qualifying to determine 16 players that advance to match play.

Burningtree Country Club in Decatur hosts the 29th Alabama State Mid-Amateur for the age 25 and over set from September 22-24. The 23rd Alabama State Senior Four-Ball heads to Riverchase Country Club in Birmingham from October 13-15.

The men’s championship season culminates at The Bear’s Club in Jupiter, FL for the 16th Men’s Southeastern Challenge Match pitting top players from Alabama, Georgia and Florida in a Ryder Cup style format representing their state.

In women's golf, the 85th Alabama Women’s State Amateur travels to Montgomery Country Club in Montgomery from June 21-23. This will be the fifth time that MCC has hosted the Women’s State Amateur with the last event held 25 years ago in 1992.

The 27th Alabama Women’s Stroke Play heads to NorthRiver Yacht Club in Tuscaloosa from July 12-14. Two women’s championships have new dates for this year. The 10th Alabama Women’s State Four-Ball moves up into the summer and is scheduled at GlenLakes Golf Club in Foley on July 27-28. The 45th Alabama Women’s State Senior Amateur will now conclude the championship season moving from early spring to a new fall date. Grayson Valley Country Club in Birmingham plays host on October 25-27.

Alabama will field a three-member team for the final time at the USGA Women’s State Team Championship at Las Campanas in Santa Fe, NM from September 26-28. The USGA will retire the State Team competitions following this year’s event.

In junior golf, the Huntsville area will serve as the epicenter for junior championships this season. The 72nd Alabama Boys State Junior will be played July 25-27 at Huntsville Country Club while the 54th Alabama Girls State Junior will be contested at Valley Hill Country Club from June 27-29. Caddies will now be permitted for the two state junior championships provided the caddie is 18 years or younger. Alabama will be the defending champion at the 6th Southern Junior Cup hosted this year by Mississippi at The Country Club of Oxford in Oxford, MS.

New this year, the AGA will include cart fees into tournament entry fees to streamline the championship experience. A Super Senior division has been added to the Alabama State Senior Four-Ball if both team members are age 65+. Also, a Senior division has been added to the Women’s State Amateur, Women’s Stroke Play and Women’s Four-Ball Championships. At the Women’s State Senior Amateur, the Super Senior division will compete all three days.

On behalf of the United States Golf Association (USGA), the AGA will conduct and assist with 10 national championship qualifiers for the following championships: U.S. Open Local (May 10 at RTJ at Silver Lakes in Glencoe); U.S. Senior Open Sectional (June 5 at Wynlakes Golf & Country Club in Montgomery); U.S. Junior Amateur Sectional (June 14 at The Country Club of Birmingham in Birmingham); U.S. Girls’ Junior Amateur Sectional (June 30 at Wynlakes Golf & Country Club in Montgomery); U.S. Amateur Sectional (July 17 at Burningtree Country Club in Decatur); U.S. Senior Amateur Sectional (July 31 at Ol’ Colony Golf Complex in Tuscaloosa); U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur Sectional (August 2 at Turtle Point Yacht & Country Club in Killen); U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Sectional (Shoal Creek in Shoal Creek); U.S. Mid-Amateur Sectional (September 11 at Montgomery Country Club in Montgomery); 2018 U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Sectional (October 3 at Turtle Point Yacht & Country Club in Killen).

Membership at an AGA member club is required to compete in any AGA championship. Note that registration for USGA championships must be completed through the USGA at www.usga.org.

About the Alabama Golf Association (AGA)

The Alabama Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization founded in 1915 whose mission is to serve and promote amateur golf in Alabama. AGA membership consists of over 130 member clubs represented by nearly 18,500 individuals. The activities and services of the Alabama Golf Association are governed by a Board of Directors consisting of Alabama golfers who wish to serve the game and the association through service.

AGA is the USGA's liaison for golf in Alabama conducting national championship qualifying, administering the USGA Handicap system including the GHIN Handicap service, course & slope rating and education. Since 1980, the AGA has managed the affairs of the Southern Golf Association which includes conducting the Southern Amateur Championship and Southern Junior Championship, in conjunction with the Board of Directors of the Southern Golf Association.
