Johnson-West Victorious at Alabama State Four-Ball

OPELIKA, AL – Semifinal and Final match play results of the 35th Alabama State Four-Ball Championship hosted by Saugahatchee Country Club in Opelika, AL on Sunday, May 7, 2017 (6946 yards, par 36-36—72, 73.2/136).

Matt Johnson and Heath West of Dothan birdied three of last four holes to defeat Alan Coshatt and Austin Coggin of Vestavia Hills, 3 and 1, to win their first Alabama State Four-Ball Championship title.

Johnson, currently the number five ranked amateur in Alabama, and West, a recently reinstated amateur, took a 1 up lead with a birdie on the par four 6th hole. Coshatt-Coggin answered with birdies on the 8th and 9th holes to take a 1 up lead heading into the back nine. West rolled in a birdie on the par four 12th hole to square the match. He then birdied the par four 14th hole and the par five 15th hole to vault to a 2 up lead. Par three 16th hole was halved with pars. Coshatt and Coggin were unable to birdie the 17th hole thus conceding a final birdie for West ending the match with 3 and 1 score.

Coshatt and Coggin have a history with the State Four-Ball Championship. Coshatt won the title a decade ago in 2007 with Del Wood at Greystone Golf & Country Club. Coggin’s father, Tommy, won the title in 2012 with Doug Davis at Canebrake Club. Austin Coggin was a member of the victorious 2016 Alabama Southern Junior Cup team.

In the morning semifinals, Johnson-West defeated co-medalist and number one seed Vic Kyatt III of Birmingham and Andy McRae of Hoover, 3 and 1.

Coshatt-Coggin advanced past 2011 State Four-Ball champion Forrest Crabtree of Mobile and Woodie Eubanks of Trussville by a 2 and 1 margin.

About the Alabama Golf Association (AGA)
