Matt Gourgeot: 2017 Alabama State Match Play Champion

Montgomery, AL – Semifinal and Final match play results of the 17th Alabama State Match Play Championship of the Alabama Golf Association hosted by Wynlakes Golf & Country Club in Montgomery, AL on Sunday, August 6, 2017 (6865 yards, par 36-36—72, 73.1/126).

Matt Gourgeot of Decatur, defeated Robby Prater of Birmingham 2 and 1 in the Final match to win the 17th Alabama State Match Play Championship.

Gourgeot was 3 up with three to play before Prater birdied 16 and hit his tee shot on the par-3 17th to within inches. Gourgeot then made a 25–foot putt birdie putt to win the title.

Gourgeot defeated Wesley Hunter 4 and 3 in the semifinals earlier in the day, while Prater beat Connor Reid 6 and 5 in his morning match. 

Alabama State Match Play Championship is open to any male amateur golfer who is a legal resident of Alabama, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Alabama Golf Association (AGA) and has an active GHIN® USGA Handicap Index® at an AGA member club that does not exceed 8.4.

About the Alabama Golf Association (AGA)

The Alabama Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization founded in 1915 whose mission is to serve and promote amateur golf in Alabama. AGA membership consists of over 130 member clubs represented by nearly 18,500 individuals. The activities and services of the Alabama Golf Association are governed by a Board of Directors consisting of Alabama golfers who wish to serve the game and the association through service.

In addition to competitions, the AGA administers the AGA Women's Scholarship Fund that is dedicated to assisting young female golfers in higher education and supports the Alabama Turfgrass Research Foundation.

Since 1980, the AGA has managed the affairs of the Southern Golf Association which includes conducting the Southern Amateur Championship and Southern Junior Championship, in conjunction with the Board of Directors of the Southern Golf Association.
