BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Round one results of the 102nd Alabama State Amateur Championship of the Alabama Golf Association hosted by Pine Tree Country Club in Birmingham, Ala. on Thursday, June 7, 2018 (7026 yards, par 36-36—72, 74.2/138).

The 102nd Alabama State Amateur Championship began today with 156 players competing to win the most important amateur title in the state. Hosted by Pine Tree Country Club in Birmingham, the prestigious event was welcomed by sunny skies and low winds for the first round.

With an impressive seven-under 65, Matt Lorenz of Fairhope is leading the field by one stroke. Lorenz credits his successful round to strong driving and ability to keep the ball in the fairway. His round included seven birdies, an eagle and two bogeys.

One shot back is Bessemer’s Victor Kyatt. Kyatt carded seven birdies and one bogey on his way to firing a six-under 66.

Defending champion, Taylor Eyster of Birmingham, who won the title at Bent Brook Golf Club last year, posted a solid five-under 67, two shots back heading into the second round. Eyster won last year’s championship in a three-hole playoff against Turk Pettit.

Other notable scores include a 67 by Austin Gean of Florence, 68 by Nick Robillard of Birmingham, and six players posted a 69 including two-time champion Will Swift of Vestavia Hills (2002, 05).

Round two begins tomorrow morning at 7:30 a.m. from both the first and tenth tees.
