Riverchase Country Club to Host 22nd Alabama State Senior Amateur Championship

HOOVER, AL (May 16, 2019) – The best senior amateurs in the state will travel to Riverchase Country Club in Birmingham for the 22nd Alabama State Senior Amateur Championship from May 17-19, 2019. This will be the second time Riverchase has hosted the Alabama State Senior Amateur Championship (2008-Bob Dumas).

95 players are scheduled to compete in this year’s championship including defending champion Claud Cooper of Birmingham. Cooper won the title last year with a five-under 211 total for a one-stroke victory over Joey Holley.

Alongside the 22nd Alabama State Senior Amateur Championship, AGA will host the Inaugural Alabama State Super Senior Amateur Championship. A field of 20 players, ages 65 and up, will compete for the State Super Senior title.

Past champions in the field include: Claud Cooper of Birmingham (2018); Robert Nelson of Fairhope (2017); David Hancock of Greenville (2015); Tom Jungkind of Hoover (2012); Ralph Mathews of Andalusia (2010); Emile Vaughan of Montgomery (2007, 2013) and Richard Jeffers of Mobile (2005)

Format: 54 holes of gross individual stroke play. Players in the 50-56 and 57-64 Age Divisions will play the championship tees and eligible to win the Championship.  The field will be cut to the low 48 players and ties after 36 holes. For the purpose of applying the cut, the 50-56 and 57-64 Age Divisions will be treated as one division (overall).  The lowest score for 54 holes in either 50-56 or 57-64 age divisions will be the Champion.

Eligibility:  Any male amateur golfer, age 50+ as of May 16, 2019, who is a legal resident of Alabama, and has an active GHIN® USGA Handicap Index® at an AGA member club of 10.4 (15.4 or less for players 65+) is eligible for the Alabama State Senior. Entries are open to any male amateur golfer who is a legal resident of Alabama, has an active GHIN® USGA Handicap Index® at an AGA member club that does not exceed 15.4 and has reached his 65th birthday by May 17, 2019 is eligible for the 1st State Super Senior.

About the Alabama Golf Association (AGA)
