Turtle Point Yacht and Country Club to Host 103rd Alabama State Amateur Championship

The medals await their victors at Turtle Point Yacht and Country Club 

KILLEN, AL (June 4, 2018) – The best amateurs in the state will travel to Turtle Point Yacht and Country Club in Killen for the 103rd Alabama State Amateur Championship from June 6-9. This is the sixth time that Turtle Point Yacht & Country Club has hosted the Men’s State Amateur Championship (1968 - Hubert Green of Birmingham, 1976 -Richard Anthony of Birmingham, 1985 - Tom Jones of Fort Payne, 1999 - Payton Osborn of Birmingham, 2010 - Hunter Hamrick of Montgomery).

Turtle Point’s PGA Head Golf Professional, Les Holcombe, is excited to host this year’s championship.

“We are just thrilled to have everybody here,” Holcombe said. “We are excited to have so many local players in the tournament, and the golf course is in beautiful shape right now.”

156 players are scheduled to compete in this year’s championship, including defending champion Matt Lorenz of Fairhope, who won the title in 2018 at Pine Tree Country Club in Birmingham, setting the 72-hole scoring record with a 270 (-18). He is the number one ranked amateur in the state.

“It’s great to return back to Turtle Point which is one of the top facilities in the state and great supporters of our organization,” stated Andy Priest, AGA Executive Director. “We look forward to hosting the State Amateur for the first time in nine years in North Alabama.” Turtle Point last played host to the State Amateur in 2010.

Past champions in the field include: defending champion Matt Lorenz of Fairhope (2018) and Will Swift of Vestavia Hills (2005).

Format: 72 holes of stroke play. The field will be cut to the low 60 players and ties after 36 holes.  The lowest score for 72 holes will be the Champion.  In the event of a tie for the Championship, a three-hole aggregate play-off will be held immediately following play.

Eligibility: Any male amateur golfer who is a legal resident of Alabama, and has an active GHIN® USGA Handicap Index® at an AGA member club that does not exceed 8.4.
