Sophie Burks Is Crowned Champion of the 29th Women’s Stroke Play Championship

OXFORD, AL - Third round results of the 29th Women’s Stroke Play Championship of the Alabama Golf Association hosted by Cider Ridge Golf Club in Oxford, AL on Thursday, June 20, 2019.

Sophie Burks of Tallassee, rising junior golfer at Middle Tennessee State University, finished round three with a four-under par 68 to finish with an overall score of 214 (-2). Burks had a strong final round finish to secure her first individual AGA Championship with a ten-stroke lead over second place and an fifteen-shot margin over third place.

Carson McKie, round one leader, shot an even par score of 72 to finish solo second place with an overall score of 224 (+8). Anna Claire Little of Auburn, finished in third place, with a final round score of four-over par 76 and overall score of 229 (+13). 

Susan West of Tuscaloosa walked away with the Low Mid-Amateur award after posting an overall score of 236, and tied for sixth with Chloe Borders of Jacksonville.

Linda Jeffery of Prattville finished in first place of the Tournament Division after carding an even par 72 to finish with an overall score of even par 216.

Chris Spivey of Pell City finished in second place in the Tournament Division with a score of 233 (+17). Kyung-Hwa Theodoss of Hampton Cove finished in third place  with an overall score of 268 (+52).

54 holes of gross individual stroke play. The lowest score for 54 holes in the Championship Division will be the Champion. In the event of a tie for the Championship, a hole-by-hole play-off will be held immediately following play.

Entries are open to any female amateur golfer who is a legal resident of Alabama and has an active GHIN® USGA Handicap Index® at an AGA member club.

About the Alabama Golf Association (AGA)

The Alabama Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization founded in 1915 whose mission is to serve and promote amateur golf in Alabama. AGA membership consists of over 130 member clubs represented by nearly 18,500 individuals. The activities and services of the Alabama Golf Association are governed by a Board of Directors consisting of Alabama golfers who wish to serve the game and the association through service.

AGA is the USGA's liaison for golf in Alabama conducting national championship qualifying, administering the USGA Handicap system including the GHIN Handicap service, course & slope rating and education. The AGA annually conducts 19 championships and team match competitions for men, women, juniors, and seniors. The AGA also conducts Alabama high school golf championships and assists with many collegiate events including the SEC Men's Golf Championship. In addition to competitions, the AGA administers the AGA Women's Scholarship Fund that is dedicated to assisting young female golfers in higher education and supports the Alabama Turfgrass Research Foundation.

Since 1980, the AGA has managed the affairs of the Southern Golf Association which includes conducting the Southern Amateur Championship and Southern Junior Championship, in conjunction with the Board of Directors of the Southern Golf Association.
