HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (October 11, 2019) - First round results of the 25th Alabama State Senior Four-Ball Championship and 1st Alabama State Super Senior Four-Ball Championship hosted by Huntsville Country Club in Huntsville, AL on Friday, October 11, 2019 (Senior Championship: 6576 yards, par 36-35—71, 71.1/124; Super-Senior Championship: 5956 yards, par 36-35—71, 68.4/118).

This year marks the 25th playing of the Alabama State Senior Four-Ball Championship and the first playing of the State Super Senior Four-Ball Championship. Previously, Super Seniors competed in their own division for teams where both players were age 65+ but was not recognized as a standalone championship.  

In the Senior Championship, Marc Wallace of Trinity and Will Tyner of Pelham along with Claud Cooper of Birmingham and Richard Jeffers of Mobile each fired seven-under 64’s to share the first round lead.

Senior Championship Round 1 Notes:

  • 25 teams are under par through 18 holes with field average score of 70.31
  • 64 (-7) was the low round of the day carded by two teams: Marc Wallace and Will Tyner; Claud Cooper and Richard Jeffers
  • 133 birdies and 2 eagles posted in round one
  • Easiest hole: No. 6, 518 yard par 5, 4.74 scoring average
  • Hardest Hole: No. 15, 186 yard par 3, 3.23 scoring average

In the Super Senior Championship, John Coles of Birmingham and Tom Jungkind of Hoover carded a six-under 65 to take a one shot lead.

Super Senior Championship Round 1 Notes:

  • 8 teams are under par through 18 holes with field average score of 70.29
  • 65 (-6) was the low round of the day carded by John Coles and Tom Jungkind
  • 51 birdies and 3 eagles posted in round one
  • Easiest hole: No. 14, 484 yard par 5, 4.50 scoring average
  • Hardest Hole: No. 15, 165 yard par 3, 3.43 scoring average

Championship format is 54 holes of four-ball stroke play with a cut after 36 holes to the low 24 sides and ties in the Senior Championship and low 8 sides and ties in the Super Senior Championship.

Awards will be presented to the Champions in both the Senior Championship and Super Senior Championship (age 65+). Merchandise prizes will be awarded to the top finishers in each championship. Senior Championship Champions will have their name engraved on the Bob Phillips Trophy and may take possession of the trophy for the ensuing year.

Alabama State Senior Four-Ball Championship is open to any male amateur golfer who has reached his 50th birthday by the first day of the championship, is a legal resident of Alabama, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Alabama Golf Association (AGA) and has an active GHIN® USGA Handicap Index® at an AGA member club. Alabama State Super Senior Four-Ball Championship is open to AGA members age 65 and over.

About the Alabama Golf Association (AGA)

The Alabama Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization founded in 1915 whose mission is to serve and promote amateur golf in Alabama. AGA membership consists of over 130 member clubs represented by over 19,000 individuals. The activities and services of the Alabama Golf Association are governed by a Board of Directors consisting of Alabama golfers who wish to serve the game and the association through service.

AGA is the USGA's liaison for golf in Alabama conducting national championship qualifying, administering the USGA Handicap system including the GHIN Handicap service, course & slope rating and education. The AGA annually conducts 20 championships and team match competitions for men, women, juniors, and seniors. The AGA also conducts Alabama high school golf championships and assists with many collegiate events including the SEC Men's Golf Championship. In addition to competitions, the AGA administers the AGA Women's Scholarship Fund that is dedicated to assisting young female golfers in higher education and supports the Alabama Turfgrass Research Foundation.

Since 1980, the AGA has managed the affairs of the Southern Golf Association which includes conducting the Southern Amateur Championship and Southern Junior Championship, in conjunction with the Board of Directors of the Southern Golf Association.
