HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (October 13, 2019) - Final results of the 25th Alabama State Senior Four-Ball Championship and 1st Alabama State Super Senior Four-Ball Championship hosted by Huntsville Country Club in Huntsville, AL on Sunday, October 13, 2019 (Senior Championship: 6576 yards, par 36-35—71, 71.1/124; Super-Senior Championship: 5956 yards, par 36-35—71, 68.4/118).

In the Senior Championship, Claud Cooper of Birmingham and Richard Jeffers of Mobile fired a final round six-under 65 to win the title by four shots at 194 (-19) over Robert Nelson of Fairhope and Walker Grant of Montgomery.

Senior Championship Round 3 Notes:

  • 23 teams finished the championship under par with field average score of 69.42 in the final round
  • 65 (-6) was the low round of the day carded by Claud Cooper and Richard Jeffers along with Joey Holley and Steven Hudson
  • 100 birdies and 0 eagles posted in round three
  • Easiest hole: No. 11, 501 yard par 5, 4.43 scoring average
  • Hardest Hole: No. 3, 419 yard par 4, 4.14 scoring average

In the Super Senior Championship, John Coles of Birmingham and Tom Jungkind of Hoover led wire-to-wire to win the Inaugural State Super Senior Four-Ball Championship. They finished the weekend with a 197 (-16) total to win by three strokes over Fred Clark and Wayne Gardner of Mobile.

Super Senior Championship Round 3 Notes:

  • 7 teams finished the championship under par with field average score of 68.38 in the final round
  • 66 (-5) was the low round of the day carded by Fred Clark and Wayne Gardner
  • 30 birdies and 1 eagle posted in round three
  • Easiest hole: No. 11, 475 yard par 5, 4.38 scoring average
  • Hardest Hole: No. 13, 351 yard par 4, 4.25 scoring average

This year marks the 25th playing of the Alabama State Senior Four-Ball Championship and the first playing of the State Super Senior Four-Ball Championship. Previously, Super Seniors competed in their own division for teams where both players were age 65+ but was not recognized as a standalone championship.  

Awards were presented to the Champions in both the Senior Championship and Super Senior Championship (age 65+). Senior Championship Champions will have their name engraved on the Bob Phillips Trophy and may take possession of the trophy for the ensuing year.

Alabama State Senior Four-Ball Championship is open to any male amateur golfer who has reached his 50th birthday by the first day of the championship, is a legal resident of Alabama, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Alabama Golf Association (AGA) and has an active GHIN® USGA Handicap Index® at an AGA member club. Alabama State Super Senior Four-Ball Championship is open to AGA members age 65 and over.

About the Alabama Golf Association (AGA)

The Alabama Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization founded in 1915 whose mission is to serve and promote amateur golf in Alabama. AGA membership consists of over 130 member clubs represented by over 19,500 individuals. The activities and services of the Alabama Golf Association are governed by a Board of Directors consisting of Alabama golfers who wish to serve the game and the association through service.

AGA is the USGA's liaison for golf in Alabama conducting national championship qualifying, administering the USGA Handicap system including the GHIN Handicap service, course & slope rating and education. The AGA annually conducts 20 championships and team match competitions for men, women, juniors, and seniors. The AGA also conducts Alabama high school golf championships and assists with many collegiate events including the SEC Men's Golf Championship. In addition to competitions, the AGA administers the AGA Women's Scholarship Fund that is dedicated to assisting young female golfers in higher education and supports the Alabama Turfgrass Research Foundation.

Since 1980, the AGA has managed the affairs of the Southern Golf Association which includes conducting the Southern Amateur Championship and Southern Junior Championship, in conjunction with the Board of Directors of the Southern Golf Association.
