Alabama Golf Association Announces Updated Summer 2020 Championship Schedule

HOOVER, AL (April 30, 2020) – The Alabama Golf Association remains committed to the safety and well-being of everyone involved with our competitions during the COVID-19 pandemic including players, volunteers, spectators, club personnel and staff.

Based upon the latest “Phased Re-Opening” recommendations from state and federal officials while still following social distancing and sanitation guidelines, we will implement a similar approach for AGA competitions this summer subject to any unforeseen developments.

A four-phase program has been developed that begins with “Phase 1” where the next event will scale to “Phase 2” if conditions warrant and so forth until we reach “Phase 4” which will be the new normal. Note that if conditions improve faster than the “Phased Approach” that phase(s) could be modified or if conditions worsen then an event could be scaled down.

Four Event Phases:

  • Phase 1 Event - walking only, no caddies, no carts (including spectators), limited field
  • Phase 2 Event - introduce one cart per player, no caddies, limited field
  • Phase 3 Event - introduce caddies, one cart per player (if possible), limited field
  • Phase 4 Event – “New Normal” with caddies, shared golf carts, full field

To accomplish a “Phased Approach”, the 104th Alabama State Amateur Championship originally scheduled for June 10-13 has been postponed until July 29-August 1 at Saugahatchee Country Club in Auburn. Due to this date change, the Alabama State Match Play and Senior Match Play Championships at AU Club from July 30-August 2 are cancelled. State Amateur sectional qualifying is cancelled with full refunds provided to those entrants. Exempt players already registered remain in the championship field. Updated State Amateur registration form, exemptions and field selection process will be available by the new registration opening date of May 11.

Our deepest appreciation goes to the staff and membership at Saugahatchee Country Club for their support of this approach and postponing the State Amateur Championship until late July.
