Kathy Hartwiger Breaks the Overall Record for Most State Tournaments Won and Mychael O'Berry is Crowned 2020 Women’s Stroke Play Champion

CALERA, AL (June 26, 2020) –  Final results of the 30th Alabama Women’s Stroke Play Championship and 47th Alabama Women’s State Senior Amateur Championship of the Alabama Golf Association hosted by Timberline Golf Club in Calera, AL on Friday, June 26, 2020.

Kathy Hartwiger of Birmingham has broken the overall record for most AGA state tournaments won, claiming her 20th title as the 47th Alabama Women’s State Senior Amateur Champion.

Hartwiger fired a three-over 74 for her final round, giving her a one-stroke lead over Susan West of Tuscaloosa. Hartwiger carded an impressive six-over 219 to be crowned champion.

West shot four-over 75 to stand second place. Overall, she carded a seven-over 220.

Chris Spivey of Pell City shot four-over 71, with an overall score of 16-over 229 to stand third place.

Debbie Atchley of Pelham posted an 81 to claim first place in the Tournament Division.

Barbee Bryant of Hoover shot a 10-over 81 for the final round, with an overall score of 31-over 244 to stand second place in the Tournament Division.

Mychael O'Berry of Hoover shot two-under 21, overall, to be crowned champion of the 30th Alabama Women’s Stroke Play Championship. Her final round par-71 placed her atop the scoreboard.

Sophie Burks of Tallassee posted a two-over 73 for her final round to stand second place. Overall, she carded an even 213.

Standing third place, Lauren Thompson of Midland City shot a three-over 74 for the day. Altogether, Thompson posted a four-over 217.

Laura Beth Yates of Lake View posted a 17-over 87 to take first place in the Tournament Division.

Linda Jeffery took home the Low Mid-Amateur award, scoring a 12-over 225 overall.

About the Alabama Golf Association (AGA)

The Alabama Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization founded in 1915 whose mission is to serve and promote amateur golf in Alabama. AGA membership consists of over 115 member clubs represented by nearly 19,000 individuals. The activities and services of the Alabama Golf Association are governed by a Board of Directors consisting of Alabama golfers who wish to serve the game and the association through service.

AGA is the USGA's liaison for golf in Alabama conducting national championship qualifying, administering the USGA Handicap system including the GHIN Handicap service, course & slope rating and education. The AGA annually conducts 23 championships and team match competitions for men, women, juniors, and seniors. The AGA also conducts Alabama high school golf championships and assists with many collegiate events including the SEC Men's Golf Championship. In addition to competitions, the AGA administers the AGA Women's Scholarship Fund that is dedicated to assisting young female golfers in higher education and supports the Alabama Turfgrass Research Foundation.

Since 1980, the AGA has managed the affairs of the Southern Golf Association which includes conducting the Southern Amateur Championship and Southern Junior Championship, in conjunction with the Board of Directors of the Southern Golf Association.
