88th Alabama Women’s State Amateur Match Play Gets Underway

HUNTSVILLE, AL – Match play results of the 88th Alabama Women’s State Amateur Championship and 2nd Alabama Women’s State Senior Match Play Championship of the Alabama Golf Association hosted by Huntsville Country Club in Huntsville, AL on Wednesday, July 8, 2020.

The 88th Alabama Women’s State Amateur Championship advanced to match play format as the top 16 players went head-to-head this morning in the championship division, eight players remaining in the afternoon quarterfinals.

A.M. Results

Playing through rainy conditions and enduring a mid-day evacuation, the 1 seed Julie Baker of Hoover finished her morning match, 5 & 4 over the number 16 seed, Anna Claire Little of Auburn.

Number 2 seed Michaela Williams of Brownsboro won her first match, defeating Ashley-Sinclair Curtis of Enterprise 5 & 3.

Number three seed Ally Williams of Athens claimed the win over Mary Mac Trammel of Mountain Brook 5 & 4.

The highest seed to fall in the morning round was Morgan Jones of Auburn, number four seed, who was defeated by Emilia Smith of Enterprise, 2 up.

The morning results saw extra holes in one match. Allison Howard of Newton defeated Hannah Pope of Florence in 21 holes.

Within the Tournament Division, Kay Theodoss of Hampton Cove defeated Keri Rutledge of Birmingham, 2 up thru 18.

In the 2nd Alabama Women’s State Senior Match Play Championship, Donna Lowen of Huntsville won 4 & 2 against Theresa Stratton of Madison. Susan West of Tuscaloosa defeated Nancy Schlich of Auburn, 5 & 4.

Tomorrow, Lowen and West will go head to head in the final round of match play to contend for the championship title.

P.M. Results

In the afternoon quarterfinals, Baker remained consistent winning 4 & 3 against Lauren Thompson of Midland City. Micheala Williams finished 5 & 3 over Karlee Allen of Berry.  Elisabeth Preus of Auburn earned a win over Ally Williams, 5 & 4. Claiming a spot in the Championship semifinals, Howard defeated Smith 3 & 2.

Tomorrow’s semi-finals will see Julie Baker play Allison Howard and Micheala Williams play Elisabeth Preus. Tee times will begin at 7:30 a.m.

In the consolation quarterfinals, Morgan Jones won 4 & 3 over Hannah Pope. Sophie Burks of Tallassee defeated Anna Claire Little in 20 holes to claim a spot in the Consolation semifinals. Emma Pittman of Pike Road finished 3 & 1 over Ashley-Sinclair Curtis. Linda Jefferey of Prattville won 3 & 2 against Mary Mac Trammell.

Tomorrow’s Consolation semifinals will see Sophie Burks play Morgan Jones and Emma Pittman play Linda Jeffery.

This championship is conducted by the Alabama Golf Association.

About the Alabama Golf Association (AGA)
