SOUTHERN JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP
1998

In 100 degree temperatures, Sean O'Hair, of Bradenton Fla., was able to stay cool enough to shoot a one under par 71 to take a three stroke win in the 1998 Southern Junior Championship at The Landings in Savannah Ga.

O'Hair, 15, who was ranked 15th in the nation going into the week, had four birdies and three bogies on the final day for what he called "a boring and slow round." Three of those birdies came on the par five fourth, 13th and 15th, where he was within 25 feet for eagle each time.

"I really got away with hitting the ball average today," he said. "I hit the fairways and green all day and was just average putting. I really lost some confidence on the greens. This tournament ranks at the top of my list in the years I have played."

Three strokes behind O'Hair was Raleigh's Buck Williams, who closed with a two under par 70. He carded five birdies and two bogies, including two of the first three on the back nine. Daniel Harrell of Vidalia, Ga. shot a one under 71 to edge out Ricardo Prieto of Bogota, Columbia, who shot a one over par 73 to finish fourth.

The low round of the day belonged to Joel Willis of St. Simons Island, Ga., who shot a 68.

Tyler Leon of Dallas won the 13-14 age division of the Championship. He carded a five over 77 to beat out Casey Wittenberg of Memphis by four strokes. Leon had one birdie, four bogies and one double bogey, but it proved to be enough for the victory.

"I did the best I could out there today, I just knew I had to play hard," Leon said. "I wasn't trying to beat Casey, I was just trying to play my game."

A field of 116 players, representing 11 states and one foreign country, slugged it out for the three days of the tournament on the beautiful, magnificently prepared Landings Club course in Savannah, Georgia. Host club chairman Kurt Faxon and his merry band of volunteers from the club had everything organized to the point that only mother nature could have gotten things off schedule, and she, thankfully, chose to stay out of the action.
