Ally Williams of Athens defeated number one seed Sophie Burks to make it into the semi-finals
Match play results of the 86th Alabama Women’s State Amateur Championship of the Alabama Golf Association hosted by The Country Club of Birmingham in Mountain Brook, Ala. on Thursday, July 12, 2018 (6002 yards, par 35-36—71, 75.9/143).
The 86th Alabama Women’s State Amateur Championship continued today with the match play stages. 16 players went head-to-head this morning in the championship division with eight players surviving to the quarter-finals in the afternoon.
A.M. Results
In the morning round of 16, first seed Sophie Burks of Equality continued her fine form to defeat Chloe Borders of Jacksonville 2 and 1. In a very close match, Burks was down through seven holes, but came back with wins at eight, nine, ten, 16, and 17. Williams claimed her victory with a par on the eighteenth hole.
2013 Alabama Women’s State Amateur Champion, Cammie Bentley of Northport won her match comfortably with a 6 and 5 win over Mary Mac Trammell of Birmingham.
Number two seed Carson McKie of Hoover also survived her first match, defeating Susie Stell of Troy by one hole.
The largest win of the day goes to Athens’ Ally Williams who defeated Leeds’ Savannah Payne 7 and 6. Williams won eight of the eleven holes.
In the tournament division, Linda Jeffrey of Prattville, Ann Lanier of Fairhope, and Nancy Gavin of Jacksons Gap played the first half of their 36 hole three-player match. At the halfway point, Jeffrey is 4up over Gavin and 8up over Lanier, and Gavin is 3up over Lanier. They will finish their match tomorrow morning.
The senior division saw seven flights compete today with five-time champion Chris Spivey of Pell City being one of the players to make the final round. The Country Club of Birmingham’s own Sandra Smith will also compete in a flight final.

In the afternoon quarterfinals, Ally Williams took down first seed Sophie Burks on the eighteenth hole. The very close match saw Williams up for most of the way, before Burks made a comeback winning holes 15 and 17 to go down the final hole all-square. Williams captured the victory
Second seed Carson McKie also exited the championship in the quarterfinals. She was defeated by Mary Kate Horton of Birmingham one up.
Tomorrow’s semi-finals will see Ally Williams play Cammie Bentley and Mary Kate Horton play Jordan Susce. Tee times begin at 7:30.
