Awards

Awards

The Alabama Golf Association presents two awards to honor outstanding playing, impact on the game and investment of time and energy in the AGA. Both the Joe H. King and Sadie Roberts Awards hold significant meaning, recognizing tremendous men and women whose dedication and efforts have made lasting contributions in giving back to the game.

Joe H. King Award

Joe H. King Award

The Joe H. King Award is the highest honor that the Alabama Golf Association presents in amateur golf. The award is a tribute to Mr. King’s contributions not only to the AGA, but to the game of golf at all levels. Joe was a fine player and this award can honor outstanding playing achievements. However, the award recognizes those men and women whose dedication and efforts have made lasting contributions in giving back to the game.

Sadie Roberts Award

Sadie Roberts Award

It is not too strong a statement to say that Sadie Roberts was responsible for the start of organized women’s golf in the state of Alabama. As the president of the Women’s Southern Golf Association in 1928, she wanted the women golfers in Alabama to have their own organization and state amateur championship. The very next year, her desire became a reality after campaigning across the state single handily. The first women’s state amateur was held at the Country Club of Birmingham. Subsequently, she served as president of the WAGA for a remarkable 22 years. She was inducted into the BGA Hall of Fame in 1967. In 2009, to coincide with the 80th anniversary of the WAGA, their Special Award was renamed the Sadie Roberts Award. It will now be given to outstanding men’s and women’s volunteers to the AGA.

Alabama Amateur Player of the Year Award

Alabama Amateur Player of the Year Award

The Alabama Amateur Player of the Year awards are presented to the number one ranked individual in each of six categories at the end of the calendar year based on the AGA’s state amateur ranking system except for the two junior awards that utilize a September-August calendar year. The Men’s Player of the Year Award was first created in 1994 to honor Alabama amateur golfers who had exceptional individual tournament performances during the year. Since then, the awards have been expanded to include Women (2010), Senior Men (2016), Senior Women (2016), Junior Boys (2017), and Junior Girls (2017).
