West and Eddy Lead the Alabama Women's State Four-Ball Championship After Round One

GULF SHORES, Ala. – Round one results of the 11th Alabama Women’s State Four-Ball Championship of the Alabama Golf Association hosted by Peninsula Golf & Racquet Club in Gulf Shores, Ala. on Tuesday, July 24, 2018 (5889 yards, par 36-36 – 72, Course/Slope Rating 72.9/119).

The 11th Alabama Women’s State Four-Ball Championship began today with 58 players (29 teams) teeing off at Peninsula Golf & Racquet Club. The Championship Division had ten teams competing, and the Senior Division had 19 teams.

The players had a 13-hole shotgun start at 1p.m. on the Cypress and Marsh courses. Team members each played their own balls, however recorded the best individual score at each hole as their team score.

Last year’s runner-up team of Susan West of Tuscaloosa and Arin Eddy of Hartselle posted a five-under par 67 to be in first place heading into the final round. Their round included birdies at holes one, four, five, nine, ten, and 11, and only one bogey which came at hole number two.

In second place following the first round is Kathy Hartwiger of Birmingham and Lea Green of McCalla. The pair made five birdies on their way to halves of 35-34 for a three-under par total of 69. They trail West and Eddy by two shots with 18 holes to go.

Defending champions Sophie Burks of Equality and Mary Kate Horton of Birmingham carded a two-under par 70 in round one. Their round included five birdies, one bogey, and one double-bogey in halves of 35-38. They are in third place going into tomorrow’s final round.

Following the first round, Jamelle Shaw of Shoal Creek and Deborah Rouse of Monroeville are leading the Senior Division. Their one-under par round of 71 included halves of 33-38 to lead by 4 shots over Barbee Bryant of Birmingham and Carol Steinert of Hoover.

The final round will be a shotgun start at 8:30a.m. tomorrow.
