Burks and Horton Come From Behind to Win The 11th Alabama Women's State Four-Ball Championship

Sophie Burks and Mary Kate Horton staged a comeback to defend their title

GULF SHORES, Ala. – Final results of the 11th Alabama Women’s State Four-Ball Championship of the Alabama Golf Association hosted by Peninsula Golf & Racquet Club in Gulf Shores, Ala. on Wednesday, July 25, 2018 (5889 yards, par 36-36 – 72, Course/Slope Rating 72.9/119).

The 11th Alabama Women’s State Four-Ball Championship concluded today with 28 teams having a shotgun start at 8:30a.m. at Peninsula Golf & Racquet Club.

Sophie Burks of Equality and Mary Kate Horton of Birmingham fired an impressive six-under par 66 in the final round to defend their title. Their round included birdies at holes one, six, eight, ten, 12, 16, and 18 to win by four shots.

In solo second place was Kathy Hartwiger of Birmingham and Lea Green of McCalla who posted a tournament total four-under par 140. Their second round 71 included three birdies and two bogeys. The team have previously won this championship in 2009, 10, and 14.

First round leaders, Susan West of Tuscaloosa and Arin Eddy of Hartselle, struggled in the final round shooting a three-over par 75. Their round included two birdies, three bogeys, and one double-bogey. They finished in third place with a tournament total of 142 (-2).

In the Senior Division, Jamelle Shaw of Shoal Creek and Deborah Rouse of Inverness fired a four-over par 76 to take home first place in flight one. Their 36 hole total of 147 beat Barbee Bryant of Birmingham and Carol Steinert of Hoover by four shots.

Susan McDaniel of Hoover and Sharon Kellum of Leeds carded a tournament total of 178 to win the Senior Division second flight.
