Heading into the final round of the 28th Alabama State Senior Amateur Championship, Chris Devlin of Hoover led the field by eleven shots. Devlin began the final round taking big strides, quickly increasing his lead on the front-nine with birdies on hole #1, #5, #8, and an eagle on #7. Devlin completed the tournament 18-under par 195, overall.
When asked about the victory and what it means to him, Devlin shared “I have been playing well and have really been working hard on my game as of late, because I’m getting ready to go try and qualify for the U.S. Senior Open. I have been working really hard, so it is really nice to see it all pay off with a large victory.”
Devlin now holds the Alabama State Senior Championship scoring record.
Shaw Pritchett of Montgomery, the 27th Alabama State Senior Champion, finished the tournament in second at one-under (71, 74, 67). Chris Hummel of Birmingham, who took home second in the 27th Alabama State Senior Championship, finished the tournament in third at even-par 213 (70, 71, 72).
David Head of Sterrett, the 4th Alabama State Super-Senior Champion, began the round tied for first amongst Tom Davis of Hoover and John Stark of Cullman and ended the tournament at one-under to claim the 7th State Super-Senior Champion title (73, 69, 70) and become a 2X Alabama State Super-Senior Amateur Champion.
Emile Vaughan of Pike Road (72, 72, 69) and John Stark of Cullman (72, 70, 71) ended round three and the tournament tied for second at even-par 213.
These Championships are conducted by the Alabama Golf Association.
About the Alabama Golf Association (AGA)
The Alabama Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization founded in 1915 whose mission is to serve and promote amateur golf in Alabama. AGA membership consists of 120 member clubs represented by over 30,000 individuals. The activities and services of the Alabama Golf Association are governed by a Board of Directors consisting of Alabama golfers who wish to serve the game and the association through service. The AGA annually conducts 24 championships; team match competitions for men, women, junior and seniors; and the AHSAA high school golf championship. The AGA manages the Junior Golf Alabama program that is a joint venture between the AGA and Alabama-NW Florida PGA Section.
In addition to competitions, the AGA administers the AGA Scholarship Fund through the Alabama Golf Foundation that is dedicated to assisting young golfers in higher education. Additionally, the Alabama Golf Foundation supports the Youth on Course Alabama program providing facility access to junior golfers and provides funding for the Alabama Turfgrass Research Foundation. In 2016, the AGA earned the Gold Tee Award for “Outstanding Tournament Operations – Small Association” by the International Association of Golf Administrators (IAGA).
Since 1980, the AGA has managed the affairs of the Southern Golf Association which includes conducting the historic Southern Amateur Championship and Southern Junior Championship, in conjunction with the Board of Directors of the Southern Golf Association.
