MONTGOMERY, Ala. (October 12, 2018) - First round results of the 24th Alabama State Senior Four-Ball Championship hosted by Wynlakes Golf & Country Club in Montgomery, AL on Friday, October 12, 2018 (Championship Division: 6564 yards, par 36-36—72, 71.1/124; 65+ Division: 5928 yards, par 36-36—72, 68.9/123).

Defending champions Robert Nelson of Fairhope and Walker Grant of Montgomery fired an opening round of eight-under par 64 to hold a one shot lead over Joey Holley of Troy and Stan Sherlin of Montgomery.

In the Super Senior Division, David Fry of Montgomery and Wayne Gardner of Mobile carded a five-under 67 to take a two shot lead over Hal Thurmond and Ron Aldy of Tuscaloosa.

Round 1 Notes:

  • 12 teams are under par through 18 holes with field average score of 72.14
  • 64 (-8) was the low round of the day carded by Robert Nelson and Walker Grant
  • 89 birdies and 2 eagles posted in round one
  • Easiest hole: No. 13, 533 yard par 5, 4.72 scoring average
  • Hardest Hole: No. 18, 431 yard par 4, 4.31 scoring average

Championship format is 54 holes of four-ball stroke play with no cut. Awards will be presented to the Champions in both the Championship (Ages 50-64) and Super Senior (Ages 65+) divisions. Merchandise prizes will be awarded to the top finishers in each division. Championship Division winners will have their name engraved on the Bob Phillips Trophy.

Alabama State Senior Four-Ball Championship is open to any male amateur golfer who has reached his 50th birthday by the first day of the championship, is a legal resident of Alabama, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Alabama Golf Association (AGA) and has an active GHIN® USGA Handicap Index® at an AGA member club.

About the Alabama Golf Association (AGA)

The Alabama Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization founded in 1915 whose mission is to serve and promote amateur golf in Alabama. AGA membership consists of over 130 member clubs represented by nearly 18,500 individuals. The activities and services of the Alabama Golf Association are governed by a Board of Directors consisting of Alabama golfers who wish to serve the game and the association through service.

Since 1980, the AGA has managed the affairs of the Southern Golf Association which includes conducting the Southern Amateur Championship and Southern Junior Championship, in conjunction with the Board of Directors of the Southern Golf Association.
