Robert Nelson of Fairhope Leads with 66 (-6)

Birmingham, AL - First round results of the 22nd Alabama State Senior Amateur Championship of the Alabama Golf Association hosted by Riverchase Country Club in Birmingham, AL on Friday, May 17, 2019 (Ages 50-64: 6515 yards, par 36-36--72, 71.9/139; Ages 65+ (Super Senior): 6015 yards.

Robert Nelson of Fairhope, a former State Senior Amateur champion (2017), opened with a six-under 66. Even in the midst of a 50 minute weather delay, his game remained strong enough to finish two strokes ahead of Richard Jeffers of Mobile.

Defending champion Claud Cooper of Birmingham carded a one-over 73 to stand in a tie for 10th place.

Ron Aldy fired a five-under 67 to take a two shot lead over Stewart Alexander of Auburn after the first round of the inaugural Alabama State Super Senior Amateur Championship.

After 36 holes, the field will be cut to the low 48 scores and ties in the Overall Championship Division (Ages 50-64) and no cut in the 65+ (Super Senior Division) for the final round.

Alabama State Senior Amateur Championship is open to any male amateur golfer who has reached his 50th birthday by May 17, 2019, is a legal resident of Alabama, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Alabama Golf Association (AGA) and has an active GHIN® USGA Handicap Index® at an AGA member club that does not exceed 10.4 (ages 50-64) and 15.4 (age 65+).

About the Alabama Golf Association (AGA)

The Alabama Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization founded in 1915 whose mission is to serve and promote amateur golf in Alabama. AGA membership consists of over 130 member clubs represented by nearly 18,500 individuals. The activities and services of the Alabama Golf Association are governed by a Board of Directors consisting of Alabama golfers who wish to serve the game and the association through service.

AGA is the USGA's liaison for golf in Alabama conducting national championship qualifying, administering the USGA Handicap system including the GHIN Handicap service, course & slope rating and education. The AGA annually conducts 19 championships and team match competitions for men, women, juniors, and seniors. The AGA also conducts Alabama high school golf championships and assists with many collegiate events including the SEC Men's Golf Championship. In addition to competitions, the AGA administers the AGA Women's Scholarship Fund that is dedicated to assisting young female golfers in higher education and supports the Alabama Turfgrass Research Foundation.

Since 1980, the AGA has managed the affairs of the Southern Golf Association which includes conducting the Southern Amateur Championship and Southern Junior Championship, in conjunction with the Board of Directors of the Southern Golf Association.
