2019 Alabama Golf Association All-State Junior Teams and Junior Players of the Year Announced

2019 Alabama State Junior Players of the Year: Gordon Sargent and Michaela Morard

Hoover, AL – The Alabama Golf Association (AGA) has announced the Alabama All-State Teams for 2019.  This is the third year of the awards being presented by the Alabama Golf Association.

All-State teams are awarded based on the Alabama State Junior Golf Rankings System, which awards points per event based on the number of participants in the event combined with overall strength of field.  These tournaments must also meet additional requirements to be a sanctioned rankings event.  Teams are annually based off the player performance over the past 12 months from September 1 thru August 31.

All-State team members, the Junior Boys Player of the Year and the Junior Girls Player of the Year winners will be honored along with other Alabama State Players of the Year at the annual Alabama Golf Association awards banquet in early 2020.

2019 Alabama Girls All-State Teams

Girls First Team:

*Michaela Morard, 2020, of Huntsville is a senior at Randolph School in Huntsville and the two-time defending Alabama Girls State Player of the Year.  She won two AGA State Titles in 2019 – This included her fourth title at the Alabama Girls State Junior Championship tying Martha (Jones) Lang for most all-time victories. She followed that performance up with a victory in the Alabama Women’s State Amateur Championship at Cherokee Ridge Country Club. Morard also had a first-place finish at the AHSAA State High School Championship and advanced to the Round of 32 at the U.S. Girls’ Junior and the U.S. Women’s Amateur. Morard has eight career AGA State Titles: Alabama Girls State Junior Championship (2015, 2017-2019), Alabama Women’s State Amateur Championship (2019), Alabama Women’s Stroke Play Championship (2016, 2018), and the Alabama Women’s Four-Ball Championship (2015 with Micheala Williams). She is the number one ranked junior in the State of Alabama and the 2019 Alabama Girls State Junior Player of the Year.  She is a 2020 verbal commit to the University of Alabama.  

 
Ally Williams, 2019, of Athens is a graduate of Athens High School and a Freshman at Mississippi State University. She finished third at the Alabama Girls State Junior Championship, advanced to the semifinals at the Alabama Women’s State Amateur Championship at Cherokee Ridge Country Club, and finished fifth at the Alabama Women’s Stroke Play Championship. Williams also had several top finishes on the Southeastern Junior Golf Tour this past year. She has one career AGA State Title: Alabama Women’s Four Ball Championship (2016 with Jordan Susce). Williams finished her junior golf career as the number two ranked junior in the State of Alabama and as a member of the victorious 2019 Southern Junior Cup team.

Lauren Gilchrist, 2020, of Spanish Fort is a senior at UMS-Wright Preparatory School. She was the 2019 Girls 6A AHSAA State High School Champion at RTJ Capitol Hill and had multiple wins on the SJGT this past year. She also carded a top ten performance at the Alabama Girls State Junior Championship at Goose Pond Colony Resort and was a member of the winning Southern Junior Cup team at Willow Point Golf and Country Club. She is the third ranked junior golfer in the State of Alabama and a 2020 commit to Middle Tennessee State University.

Erika Allen, 2021, of Berry is a junior at Northside High School.  She finished second at both the 2019 AHSAA Girls State High School Championship and Alabama Girls State Junior Championship. Allen has had success while competing on the SJGT with multiple top performances including two wins and several top five finishes. Allen was a key member of the victorious 2019 Southern Junior Cup team finishing with a 4-1 record. She is currently the fourth ranked player in the State of Alabama.   

Allison Howard, 2019, of Newton is a graduate of Providence Christian School and a Freshman at Samford University. Howard wrapped up her high school career with a second-place finish at the AHSAA 1A-3A State High School Championship and had several top finishes on the Southeastern Junior Golf Tour. Howard carded a top ten finish in her final Alabama Girls State Junior Championship and advanced to the semifinals at the Alabama Women’s State Amateur Championship. She concluded her junior golf career as the fifth ranked junior in the State of Alabama.   


Girls Second Team:

Emilia Smith, 2020, of Enterprise is a senior at Enterprise High School. She finished second at the AHSAA Girls 7A State High School Championship and had a top-ten performance at the Alabama Girls State Junior Championship. Smith qualified for this year’s U.S. Girls’ Junior at Sentry World in Stevens Point, Wisconsin and carded several top finishes while competing on the SJGT including a win this past season.  She is currently the sixth ranked junior in the State of Alabama and a 2020 verbal commit to the University of Alabama-Birmingham

Elisabeth Preus, 2019, of Auburn is a graduate of Auburn High School and a freshman at Troy University. Champion at the 2019 AHSAA Girls 7A State High School Championship, advanced to the Round of 16 at the Alabama Women’s State Amateur Championship and finished 11th at the Alabama Girls State Junior Championship. Preus has also performed well on the SJGT including several top ten finishes to add to her resume. Her successful season concluded as a member of the 2019 Southern Junior Cup team at Willow Point Golf and Country Club. Preus wrapped up her junior golf career as the seventh ranked junior golfer in the State of Alabama.

Morgan Jones, 2021, of Auburn is a junior at Auburn High School. She carded several top performances including a top-five finish at the Alabama Girls State Junior Championship and the AHSAA Girls State High School Championship. She also competed in several AJGA and SJGT events which included a duo of top-five finishes.  Morgan was also a member of the winning 2019 Southern Junior Cup team at Willow Point Golf and Country Club. Jones is currently the eighth ranked junior in the State of Alabama and a 2021 commit to Auburn University.    

Emma Pittman, 2020, of Pike Road is a senior at Trinity High School. Finished fourth at the AHSAA Girls 4A-5A State High School Championship and a top-15 finish at the Alabama Girls State Junior Championship at Goose Pond Colony Resort. Pittman also had success while competing on the SJGT with several top ten finishes, including one win. She is currently the ninth ranked junior golfer in the State of Alabama.
 
Lauren Thompson, 2021, of Midland City is a junior at Providence Christian School.  She won the 2019 AHSAA Girls 1A-3A State High School Championship and finished fourth at the Alabama Girls State Junior Championship after firing an opening round 68. Thompson qualified for the Girls Junior PGA Championship in Connecticut and has multiple top-5 finishes on the SJGT. She is the 10th ranked junior golfer in the State of Alabama.   


Girls Third Team:

Ashley Sinclair-Curtis, 2020, of Enterprise is a senior at Enterprise High School. She finished second at the AHSAA Girl’s State High School Championship at RTJ Capitol Hill in Prattville and had several top five finishes on the SJGT as well as two wins on the AL-NWFL PGA Circuit.  She is currently the 11th ranked junior in the State of Alabama.   

Hannah Dees, 2021, of Fairhope is a junior at Fairhope High School. Dees finished seventh at the Alabama Girls State Junior Championship at Goose Pond Colony Resort after firing a one-under 71 in the second round. She had several top-ten performances on the SJGT this year including a tie for third and seventh. Hannah is currently the 12th ranked junior in the State of Alabama.

Marilyn Steed, 2020, of Birmingham is a senior at Spain Park High School. Steed had a top-ten finish at the AHSAA Girls 7A State High School Championship at RTJ Capitol Hill in Prattville. She also had several top five finishes while competing on the SJGT this season. She is currently the 13th ranked junior golfer in the State of Alabama and a verbal commit to the University of Alabama-Birmingham.

Jinger Heath, 2023, of Decatur is a freshman at Decatur High School. Heath placed eleventh at this year’s Alabama Girls State Junior Championship at Goose Pond Colony Resort after firing three consecutive rounds in the 70’s. Jinger also completed multiple top ten finishes this year on the Southeastern Junior Golf Tour. She is currently the 14th ranked junior golfer in the State of Alabama.  

Hanna Dyar, 2020, of Anniston is a senior at Anniston High School.  She finished ninth at the Alabama Women’s Stroke Play Championship, made the Round of 16 at the Alabama Women’s State Amateur Championship and added a top-30 finish at the Alabama Girls State Junior Championship.  Dyar also wrapped up her junior year with a top ten finish at the AHSAA Girls 4A-5A State High school Championship.  She finishes the season as the 15th ranked junior in the State of Alabama.   

2019 Alabama Boys All-State Teams

Boys First Team: 

 *Gordon Sargent, 2021, of Birmingham is a junior at Mountain Brook High School. He won the 74th Alabama Boys State Junior Championship at Indian Hills Country Club in Tuscaloosa after firing a score of 12-under par clearing second place by 6 shots. Sargent finished second at the Bobby Chapman Junior Invitational, made the Round of 64 at the U.S. Junior Championship, and made the cut at the Junior PGA Championship. Gordon has one career AGA State Title: Alabama Boys State Junior Championship (2019). He is a 2021 commit to Vanderbilt University and the number one ranked junior in the State of Alabama claiming the 2019 Alabama Junior Boys Player of the Year.  

Jones Free, 2021, of Marion Junction is a junior at Morgan Academy in Selma.  He was the champion of the 2019 Future Masters at Dothan Country Club and AISA State High School Championship. Free finished fourth at the Alabama Boys State Junior Championship and made the cut at the Alabama State Amateur Championship. He also had several high finishes on the SJGT including one win and performed well with the AJGA posting a second-place finish at the AJGA Preview at Chateau Elan. He was a member of the victorious Team Alabama at the 2019 Southern Junior Cup at Willow Point Golf and Country Club.  Free is the number two ranked junior in the State of Alabama and a 2021 commit to the University of Alabama.

Ford Goldasich, 2019, of Homewood is a graduate of Homewood High School and a Freshman at Lipscomb University in Nashville, TN. Second place at the Alabama State Amateur Championship at Turtle Point Yacht and Country Club and nearly ran down his older brother with a final round 67.  Goldasich had multiple top-ten performances including the Alabama Boys State Junior, AJGA Stewart Cink Championship and the AHSAA Boys 6A State High School Championship.  Goldasich concluded his junior golf career as a member of the victorious Team Alabama at the 2019 Southern Junior Cup and is the third ranked junior golfer in the State of Alabama.

Price Brown, 2020, of Mobile is a senior at McGill-Toolen Catholic High School. Brown finished seventh at the Alabama Boys State Junior Championship, qualified for the Junior PGA Championship, and won the AJGA Visit Tallahassee Preview as the only player under par. He also had success competing on the Southeastern Junior Golf Tour where he racked up three top-10 performances and added a top five finish at the AHSAA Boys 7A State High School Championship. He is the fourth ranked junior in the State of Alabama and a 2020 verbal commit to the University of Alabama-Birmingham.

Austin Coggin, 2019, of Vestavia Hills is a graduate of Vestavia Hills High School and a Freshman at Auburn University. Coggin finished third at the Alabama State Amateur Championship after completing all four rounds at par or better.  He was the champion at the AHSAA Boys 7A State High School Championship, added a top three finish at the Future Masters and made the cut at the Western Junior finishing top-30. Coggin concluded his junior career as a member of the victorious 2019 Southern Junior Cup team and the fifth ranked junior golfer in the State of Alabama.


Boys Second Team:

Harrison Davis, 2020, of Fort Payne is a senior at Fort Payne High School. Davis finished top-15 at the Alabama Boys State Junior Championship and made the cut at the Alabama State Amateur Championship. He was the champion at the AHSAA Boys 6A State High School Championship at RTJ Capitol Hill, third at both the 2019 Future Masters and Bubba Conlee and had several top-ten finishes on the Southeastern Junior Golf Tour including one win. Harrison was also a member of the victorious 2019 Southern Junior Cup team wrapping up the year as the sixth ranked junior in the State of Alabama. He is a 2020 Mississippi State University verbal commit.

Garrison Guthrie, 2020, of Auburn is a senior at Auburn High School. Guthrie finished second at the Alabama Boys State Junior Championship at Indian Hills Country Club after firing a final round 67. He also qualified for the US Junior Championship at Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio and had several strong performances on the Southeastern Junior Golf Tour. He is the seventh ranked junior in the State of Alabama and is a 2020 verbal commit to the University of Alabama-Birmingham.

Cole Davidson, 2021, of Trussville is a junior at Hewitt-Trussville High School. Davidson advanced to the Round of 16 at the Alabama State Match Play, made the cut at both the 2019 Southern Junior Championship and Future Masters, and had four top-10 finishes on the Southeastern Junior Golf Tour. He is the eighth ranked junior golfer in the State of Alabama and is a 2021 verbal commit to Auburn University. 

Thomas Ponder, 2019, of Dothan is a graduate of Providence Christian Academy and a Freshman at the University of Alabama. Ponder advanced to the Round of 32 at the US Junior Championship at Inverness Club in Toledo, OH and was the champion at the AHSAA Boys 4A State High School Championship He also had several top-25 showings highlighted by the 2019 Future Masters and Jones Cup Junior Invitational. He concluded his junior career as the ninth ranked junior golfer in the State of Alabama.
 
J.P. Cave, 2020, of Mobile is a senior at UMS-Wright Preparatory School. Cave carded a top 15 finish at the Alabama Boys State Junior, made the cut at the Southern Junior, and third at the AJGA Arnold Palmer Junior Invitational at Bay Hill Club. He helped lead UMS-Wright to their fourth straight state title at the AHSAA Boys 5A State High School Championship at RTJ Capitol Hill. Cave is the 10th ranked junior golfer in the State of Alabama and a 2020 verbal commit to the University of Alabama.


Boys Third Team:

Max Johnson, 2020, of Fairhope is a senior at Fairhope High School. Johnson finished seventh at the Alabama Boys State Junior Championship, made the cut at the Junior PGA Championship and a top-20 finish at the 2019 Future Masters.  He had several high SJGT finishes which included a first-place finish and carded a top-20 finish at the 2019 Bubba Conlee. He is the 11th ranked junior in the State of Alabama.

Matthew Madden, 2020, of Northport is a senior at Northridge High School. Madden posted a top five finish at this year’s Alabama Boys State Junior, made the cut at the Alabama State Amateur Championship and had one SJGT win and several top five finishes. He is the 12th ranked junior golfer in the State of Alabama and is a 2020 verbal commit to Samford University. 

Mac Scott, 2020, of Mountain Brook is a senior at Mountain Brook High School. Scott had a top ten finish at the Alabama Boys State Junior, made the cut at both the 2019 Southern Junior Championship and Future Masters, and qualified for the Alabama State Amateur Championship at Turtle Point Yacht and Country Club. He is currently the 13th ranked junior in the State of Alabama and a 2020 verbal commit to Furman University in Greenville, SC.

Ryan Eshleman, 2020, of Vestavia Hills is a senior at Vestavia Hills High School.  Eshleman finished third at the Alabama Boys State Junior Championship at Indian Hills Country Club, top-five at the AHSAA Boys 7A State High School Championship and had multiple top-20 finishes on the AJGA and SJGT. Eshleman is the 14th ranked junior in the State of Alabama and is a 2020 verbal commit to Auburn University.

Reynolds Lambert, 2019, of Birmingham is a graduate of Mountain Brook High School and a Freshman at Furman University in Greenville, SC.  Lambert made the Quarterfinals at the Alabama State Match Play Championship, qualified for the Alabama State Amateur Championship and finished second at the AHSAA Boys 7A State High School Championship helping Mountain Brook High School to another State Title. He also made the cut at the Jones Cup Junior and Gator Invitational. Lambert concluded his junior golf career the 14th ranked junior in the State of Alabama

About the Alabama Golf Association (AGA)

The Alabama Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization founded in 1915 whose mission is to serve and promote amateur golf in Alabama. AGA membership consists of over 130 member clubs represented by nearly 18,000 individuals. The activities and services of the Alabama Golf Association are governed by a Board of Directors consisting of Alabama golfers who wish to serve the game and the association through service.

AGA is the USGA's liaison for golf in Alabama conducting national championship qualifying, administering the USGA Handicap system including the GHIN Handicap service, course & slope rating and education. Since 1980, the AGA has managed the affairs of the Southern Golf Association which includes conducting the Southern Amateur Championship and Southern Junior Championship, in conjunction with the Board of Directors of the Southern Golf Association.
