Stroke Play Qualifying Results at the Alabama State Match Play Championships

Tanner Guthrie of Auburn and Shaw Pritchett of Montgomery Earn Medalist Honors at the  22nd Alabama State Match Play and 3rd Alabama State Senior Match Play Championships Stroke Play Qualifying

MUSCLE SHOALS, AL (August 4, 2023) – Round Two Results of
the 22nd Alabama State Match Play and 3rd Alabama State Senior Match Play Championships hosted by RTJ Golf Trail at The Shoals (Fighting Joe) in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, from Aug. 3-6, 2023.  
 
 
After a five-hour weather delay, play began at 2:00 p.m. today with a shotgun start.  
 
Tanner Guthrie of Auburn earned medalist honors at the 22nd Alabama State Match Play Championship. Guthrie ended the day nine-under 135 for the two stroke play qualifying rounds to lead the Championship into match play format.    
  
Ken Goforth of Birmingham finished second, posting an eight-under 136 for the stroke play qualifying rounds. Austin Coggin of Birmingham finished third, posting a seven-under 137.  
 
The cut to the low 16 players fell at one-under 143 within the Alabama State Match Play Championship.   
  
Shaw Pritchett of Montgomery earned medalist honors at the 3rd Alabama State Senior Match Play Championship with an overall score of 11-under 127 for the stroke play qualifying rounds to stand first seed for match play. Pritchett made eleven birdies during his bogey-free round today.   
 
“My strategy from here out is just to forget what happened the first two days,” said Pritchett. “Everybody starts at even tomorrow, so it’s all starting new and I’m going to play it like that.”  
 
Jeff Taylor of Montgomery finished nine strokes behind Pritchett, posting an eight-under 136 for his stroke play qualifying rounds. Robbie Cotton of Brewton carded with a six-under 138 to finish third.    
 
The cut to the low 16 players fell at seven-over 151. After a two-man playoff within the State Senior Match Play Championship, Bill Best earned the final spot in the Round of 16.   
  
Match play (Round of 16 and Quarterfinals) for the 22nd Alabama State Match Play and 3rd Alabama State Senior Match Play Championships will begin on Saturday, Aug. 4, at 7:30 a.m. off #1.
