Team Alabama Captures Historic Victory at the 20th Southeastern Challenge Match

HOOVER, AL (Oct. 20, 2025) – Team Alabama has claimed a monumental victory at the 20th Southeastern Challenge Match, securing the coveted title for the first time since 1991. With a commanding performance and a total of 25.5 points, Alabama triumphed over teams from Florida and Georgia, bringing the championship trophy back to Alabama after a 34-year wait.

Hosted at Rivermont Golf Club in Johns Island, Georgia, this year’s competition showcased the finest mid-amateur and senior talent from across the Southeast. Team Alabama established an early lead on Saturday in both the Four-Ball and Foursomes rounds to finish the opening day with 11.5 total points, a 3.5 point lead over Team Georgia and a 4.0 point lead over Team Florida.
 
Team Alabama continued to build on their lead throughout the final round, capping off Sunday’s Three Ball Matches with 14 total points.  
 
Throughout the competition, Team Alabama delivered dominant performances in every session, completing a clean sweep of all formats and sealed their victory with 25.5 total points.
 
“Bringing this title back to Alabama after more than three decades is incredibly special,” said AGA Executive Director, Jeremy Gardner. “Our players showed remarkable grit, sportsmanship, and pride for our state. This victory is a testament to their dedication and competitive spirit.”
 
Final Team Standings:
  • 1st – Alabama: 25.5 points
  • 2nd – Florida: 20.5 points
  • 3rd – Georgia: 17.0 points
The Southeastern Challenge Match, a biennial competition featuring elite amateur golfers, has long been a stage for state pride and high-level competition. With this victory, Alabama not only ends a historic drought but also reaffirms its place among the premier golfing states in the region.
 
The Southeastern Challenge Match returns to the state of Alabama in 2027 for the 21st edition of the event where Team Alabama will try to defend the title.

About the Alabama Golf Association (AGA) 
The Alabama Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization founded in 1915 whose mission is to serve and promote amateur golf in Alabama. AGA membership consists of 122 member clubs represented by over 33,000 individuals. Additionally, the Alabama Golf Foundation supports the Youth on Course Alabama program providing facility access to junior golfers and provides funding for the Alabama Turfgrass Research Foundation. In 2016, the AGA earned the Gold Tee Award for “Outstanding Tournament Operations – Small Association” by the International Association of Golf Administrators (IAGA).
 
Since 1980, the AGA has managed the affairs of the Southern Golf Association which includes conducting the historic Southern Amateur Championship and Southern Junior Championship, in conjunction with the SGA Board of Directors.
