Weaver and Jones 62 Leads Alabama State Four-Ball

TUSCALOOSA, AL– First round stroke play qualifying results of the 36th Alabama State Four-Ball Championship hosted by Indian Hills Country Club in Tuscaloosa, AL on Thursday, April 26, 2018 (6544 yards, par 35-36—71, 71.5/128).

Phillip Weaver of Tuscaloosa and Elliott Jones of Tuscaloosa fired a nine-under par 62 to take a one-stroke lead after the first round. Weaver and Jones combined to card nine birdies in their round.

Matt Johnson of Dothan and Lew Mitchell of Dothan are one-shot back after posting 8-under par 63.  Johnson won the 35th Alabama State Four-Ball with Heath West of Dothan last year at Saugahatchee Country Club.

Despite some early rain, leading to a 3-hour delayed start, and a period of windy conditions with gusts up to 30 mph, competitors caught a break in the weather for the most part considering the ominous forecast.

The average score in round one was 70.6 with 22 teams breaking par on the 6544 yard Indian Hills layout.

The championship format is contested over 36-holes of four-ball stroke play qualifying to determine 16 sides for match play.
