100th Alabama Men’s State Amateur Championship Begins on Thursday

The Country Club of Birmingham - West Course 18th Hole

BIRMINGHAM, AL – The Country Club of Birmingham will be hosting the Alabama Golf Association’s 100th Men’s State Amateur Championship from June 9-12.  The Championship will be conducted on a stroke play basis for 72 holes, 18 holes daily on the West Course. There will be 156 players at the Championship site to begin play. After 36 holes the field will be reduced to the low 66 scores and ties for the final 36 holes of play.  The event is open to spectators.

Thursday, June 9
7:30 am – 9:30 am/12:30 pm – 2:30 pm Round one starting times

Friday, June 10     
7:30 am – 9:30 am/12:30 pm – 2:30 pm Round two starting times
Cut to low 66 scores and ties. Field re-paired according to score for round three.

Saturday, June 11              
7:30 am – 9:30 am Round three starting times
11:00 am – 3:00 pm Player’s lunch
Field re-paired according to score for round four.

Sunday, June 12
7:30 am – 9:30 am Round four starting times
11:00 am – 3:00 pm Player’s lunch
Awards ceremony immediately following play at scoreboard.
 
Prizes
Awards will be presented to the low 10 scorers posting 72 hole scores. In addition, the Champion will have their name engraved the Sam D. Perry trophy housed at the AGA office.

History of the Event
This year marks the 100th playing of the Alabama Men’s State Amateur Championship and the tenth time that Country Club of Birmingham has hosted the event (1919, 1927, 1933, 1936, 1942, 1961, 1974, 1989, and 2001). The Championship was first played in 1915 at Montgomery Country Club in Montgomery, AL. Jack Allison of Birmingham, AL defeated Norborne R. Clarke 13 and 12 to win the inaugural event. The Championship was not played in 1917-18 due to World War I. Format was changed from match play to stroke play in 1955.

Will Cannon of Birmingham looks to defend his title for the third year in a row after winning in both 2014 & 2015.  Other past champions back in the field and looking for another State Amateur title are John Coles, III, Birmingham (1996); Robbie Cotten, Brewton (1990); Richard Jeffers, Mobile (1997); Andy McRae, Hoover (2012); Ben Moody, Vestavia Hills (2006); Will Swift, Hoover (2002, 2005); and John Wright, Gulf Shores (1989).
 
About the Alabama Golf Association (AGA)
The Alabama Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization founded in 1915 whose mission is to serve and promote amateur golf in Alabama. AGA membership consists of over 130 member clubs represented by nearly 18,500 individuals. The activities and services of the Alabama Golf Association are governed by a Board of Directors consisting of Alabama golfers who wish to serve the game and the association through service.
 
AGA is the USGA's liaison for golf in Alabama conducting national championship qualifying, administering the USGA Handicap system including the GHIN Handicap service, course & slope rating and education. Since 1980, the AGA has managed the affairs of the Southern Golf Association which includes conducting the Southern Amateur Championship and Southern Junior Championship, in conjunction with the Board of Directors of the Southern Golf Association.
