Alabama Golf Association Announces Southern Junior Cup Team

BIRMINGHAM, AL- The fifth playing of the Southern Junior Cup Matches will take place in Little Rock, AR from August 4-5, 2016 at The Country Club of Little Rock. Alabama will be fielding a team for the first time replacing Oklahoma that withdrew from the matches. Alabama will compete against teams from Arkansas, Mississippi, and Missouri. This invitation only event is comprised of a select group of six female juniors and six male junior players selected by each state golf association.  
 
Format
Southern Junior Cup format consists of 18 holes of match play with Four-Ball, Foursomes, and singles match play sessions. Each match is worth 1 point. Half point to each side for a tie. Each state competes against the other three states in an equal number of matches. Four-Ball and Foursomes partners consists of one male and one female sides, while individual matches pits male vs. male and female vs. female.  
 
Event History
Past Winners: Oklahoma (2012, 13, 14 ,15). Alabama replaced Oklahoma in 2016. Future Host Sites: Mississippi (2017), Missouri (2018), Alabama (2019)

Female Team Members
Sophie Burks, 17, of Montgomery is a rising senior at Trinity High School. T2 at 2016 AHSAA 4A/5A championship. Currently T21 ranked women’s amateur in Alabama.
 
Virginia Green, 17, of Point Clear is a rising high school senior at Fairhope High School. Currently the #3 ranked women’s amateur in Alabama. Runner-up at 2016 Alabama Women’s State Amateur. 2014 Alabama State Girls Junior Champion and 2014 Alabama Women’s Player of the Year. She has committed to playing college golf at Vanderbilt University in fall 2017.
 
Michaela Morard, 14, of Huntsville is a rising high school freshman at Randolph School. Currently the #2 ranked women’s amateur in Alabama. She is the 2016 Alabama Women’s Stroke Play Champion, runner-up at the 2016 Alabama Girls State Junior despite a final round 63, 2015 Alabama Women’s Four-Ball champion with Micheala Williams. Morard has verbally committed to playing for the University of Alabama in 2020. 
 
Mychael O’Berry, 16, of Hoover is a rising senior at Hoover High School. Advanced to Round of 16 at 2016 Alabama Women’s State Amateur. T4 at 2016 Alabama State Junior Girls Championship.  Currently T21 ranked women’s amateur in Alabama.
 
Ally Williams, 15, of Athens is a rising sophomore at Athens High School. Finished fourth at 2016 Alabama Women’s Stroke Play and seventh at Alabama State Junior Girls. Currently the #10 ranked women’s amateur in Alabama. Younger sister of Micheala Williams.
 
Micheala Williams, 18, of Athens will be a freshman at the University of Tennessee this fall. Older sister of Ally Williams. She is the 2016 Alabama State Junior Girls Champion, third at the 2016 Alabama Women’s Stroke Play Championship and 2015 Alabama Women’s Four-Ball Champion along with Michaela Morard. Currently the #4 ranked women’s amateur in Alabama.

Ike Alexander, 17, of Florence is a rising senior at Mars Hill Bible School. 2016 AHSAA Boys 1A/2A Individual Champion. Finished T10 at 2016 Alabama Boys State Junior Championship.
 
J.P. Cave, 15, of Mobile is a rising high school freshman. Finished T3 at 2016 AHSAA Boys 4A and T32 at Alabama Boys State Junior.
 
Austin Coggin, 15, of Vestavia Hills is a rising high school sophomore at Vestavia Hills High School. He recently advanced to the Round of 16 at the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship at The Honors Course in TN.
 
Connor Doyal, 17, of Homewood is a rising at Homewood High School. Finished T5 at 2016 Alabama Boys State Junior and eighth at the 2016 AHSAA Boys 6A Championship.
 
Ben Fuller, 17, of Birmingham is a rising high school senior at Mountain Brook High School. Quarterfinalist at 2015 Alabama Match Play Championship. He has committed to the University of Alabama. 
 
John Racciatti, 17, of Fairhope is a rising high school senior at McGill-Toolen Catholic High School. Recently crowned 2016 Alabama Boys State Junior Champion.

About the Alabama Golf Association (AGA)

The Alabama Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization founded in 1915 whose mission is to serve and promote amateur golf in Alabama. AGA membership consists of over 130 member clubs represented by nearly 18,500 individuals. The activities and services of the Alabama Golf Association are governed by a Board of Directors consisting of Alabama golfers who wish to serve the game and the association through service.

Since 1980, the AGA has managed the affairs of the Southern Golf Association which includes conducting the Southern Amateur Championship and Southern Junior Championship, in conjunction with the Board of Directors of the Southern Golf Association.
