Weather Delays Headline Day 1 at Alabama State Match Play

Three-seeded Matt Gourgeot of Decatur Advanced to Round of 32

Brewton, AL – Round of 64 and Round of 32 match play results of the 16th Alabama State Match Play Championship of the Alabama Golf Association hosted by Country Club of Brewton in Brewton, AL on Thursday, August 4, 2016 (6949 yards, par 36-36—72, 73.3/130).

The start of the Championship was delayed for 4 hours this morning by heavy rain and severe lightning. Round of 64 play began at 11:30am CDT. Play was stopped for the day at 7:40pm CDT with 10 of the 16 matches in the Round of 32 still on the golf course. Round of 32 matches will resume play at 8am CDT, Friday, August 5.

The number one seed and number six ranked amateur in Alabama, Matt Johnson of Dothan, defeated Dave Jennings of Alexander City by a 7 and 5 score. Johnson  then defeated Jordy Hayden of Fairhope, 3 and 2, to advance to the Round of 16.

Ryan Benton of Dothan and Cam Norman of Greenville have also advanced to the Round of 16 and will square off in the first scheduled match in that round at 9am tomorrow morning.

The number two seed, Steve Hudson of Birmingham is 1 up with one to play in his Round of 32 match with Brewton’s own McGowin Miller.

Round of 16 matches will begin at 9:00am at Country Club of Brewton on Friday with the quarterfinals played in the early afternoon. Semi-final and Final Match are scheduled for Saturday, August 6. 

Alabama State Match Play Championship is open to any male amateur golfer who is a legal resident of Alabama, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Alabama Golf Association (AGA) and has an active GHIN® USGA Handicap Index® at an AGA member club that does not exceed 8.4.

About the Alabama Golf Association (AGA)

The Alabama Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization founded in 1915 whose mission is to serve and promote amateur golf in Alabama. AGA membership consists of over 130 member clubs represented by nearly 18,500 individuals. The activities and services of the Alabama Golf Association are governed by a Board of Directors consisting of Alabama golfers who wish to serve the game and the association through service.
