Saugahatchee Country Club in Opelika set to host State Four-Ball from May 4-7
BIRMINGHAM, AL (May 1, 2017) – The 2017 AGA championship season kicks-off with the 35th Alabama State Four-Ball Championship on May 4-7, 2017 at Saugahatchee Country Club in Opelika, AL. This is the first time that Saugahatchee has hosted the State Four-Ball championship. The Ward Northrup designed course will play at 6946 yards and a par of 72 for the championship.
37 teams from across the state are scheduled to play in this year’s championship including defending champions Steve Hudson of Birmingham & Robert Nelson of Fairhope. Hudson & Nelson won the title last year at Wynlakes Golf & Country Club in Montgomery with a 2 and 1 victory over Bo Farlow & Steven Groover of Birmingham.
Championship format is 36 holes of gross four-ball stroke play to determine 16 sides for match play. A tie for the last qualifier’s place (16th seed) will be decided immediately by a hole-by-hole play-off. Awards will be presented to the Champions and stroke play qualifying medalists. Merchandise prizes are awarded to top finishers. Champions will have their names engraved on the Harry Pritchett Trophy housed at the AGA office.
The Championship was first played in 1983 with Benjamin Dowdy & Joe Terrell winning the inaugural event. Dowdy & Terrell went on to win a total of four times (1983, 84, 88, 89), giving them the most Four-Ball titles in State history.
The Alabama State Four-Ball Championship is open to sides of male amateur golfers who are legal residents of Alabama and have an active GHIN® USGA Handicap Index® at an AGA member club. Maximum allowable combined team handicap is 16.8 under the USGA Handicap System™.
