Nelson and Grant Fire Back-to-Back 62’s En Route to Alabama State Senior Four-Ball Title

BIRMINGHAM, AL (October 15, 2017) - Final results of the 23rd Alabama State Senior Four-Ball Championship hosted by Riverchase Country Club in Birmingham, AL on Sunday, October 15, 2017 (Championship Division: 6515 yards, par 36-36—72, 71.9/139; 65+ Division: 5777 yards, par 36-36—72, 68.1/133).

Round 3 Notes:

  • Robert Nelson of Fairhope and Walker Grant of Montgomery fired a second consecutive round of 10-under 62 to finish at 194 (-22) and win the championship by three strokes.
  • Nelson and Grant combined for eight birdies and an eagle in their final round including a birdie-eagle-birdie-birdie run to begin their round. They overcame a nine shot deficit following the first round.
  • 36-hole leaders Emile Vaughan of Pike Road and Richard Jeffers of Mobile carded a 68 to finish in a tie for second place at 197 with Joey Holley of Troy and Stan Sherlin of Montgomery.
  • Defending champions Mike Greer of Birmingham and Tom Jungkind of Hoover posted a 69 to finish in a tie for 18th place.
  • In the Super Senior Division, Tom Worley of Vestavia Hills and Rick Sirmon of Pelham posted a final round 69 for a 209 (-7) total to win the title by three shots over Max Mathews of Andalusia and Cecil Rainey of Greenville.

Championship format is 54 holes of four-ball stroke play with no cut. Awards are presented to the Champions in both the Championship (Ages 50-64) and Super Senior (Ages 65+) divisions. Merchandise prizes are awarded to the top finishers in each division. Robert Nelson and Walker Grant will have their name engraved on the Bob Phillips Trophy.

Alabama State Senior Four-Ball Championship is open to any male amateur golfer who has reached his 50th birthday by the first day of the championship, is a legal resident of Alabama, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Alabama Golf Association (AGA) and has an active GHIN® USGA Handicap Index® at an AGA member club.

About the Alabama Golf Association (AGA)

The Alabama Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization founded in 1915 whose mission is to serve and promote amateur golf in Alabama. AGA membership consists of over 130 member clubs represented by nearly 18,500 individuals. The activities and services of the Alabama Golf Association are governed by a Board of Directors consisting of Alabama golfers who wish to serve the game and the association through service.

AGA is the USGA's liaison for golf in Alabama conducting national championship qualifying, administering the USGA Handicap system including the GHIN Handicap service, course & slope rating and education. Since 1980, the AGA has managed the affairs of the Southern Golf Association which includes conducting the Southern Amateur Championship and Southern Junior Championship, in conjunction with the Board of Directors of the Southern Golf Association.
