Richard Jeffers Takes 36 Hole Lead at Alabama State Senior Amateur

Auburn, AL – Second round results of the 21st Alabama State Senior Amateur Championship of the Alabama Golf Association hosted by Moore’s Mill Club in Auburn, AL on Saturday, May 19, 2018 (Ages 50-64: 6433 yards, par 36-36—72, 70.7/129; Ages 65+ (Super Senior): 5419 yards, par 36-36—72, 66.5/116).

In the overall championship, Richard Jeffers of Mobile carded a three-under 69 to finish at 142 and hold a one stroke lead over David Hancock of Greenville heading into Sunday’s final round.

Defending champion Robert Nelson of Fairhope carded a two-under 70 to stand in a tie for ninth place at 147.  Round one leader Claud Cooper of Birmingham posted a five-over 77 and trails the lead by four strokes at 146.

In the 65+ Super Senior Division, Wayne Gardner of Mobile posted a second round 69 to stand at 144 and hold a one-shot lead over George Walker of Mobile, who fired a second round six-under 66.

The field was cut to the low 48 scores and ties in the Overall Championship Division (Ages 50-64). The cut line fell at 160 (+16) with 50 players advancing to the final round. There was no cut in the 65+ Super Senior Division.

Alabama State Senior Amateur Championship is open to any male amateur golfer who has reached his 50th birthday by May 19, 2017, is a legal resident of Alabama, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Alabama Golf Association (AGA) and has an active GHIN® USGA Handicap Index® at an AGA member club that does not exceed 10.4 (ages 50-64) and 15.4 (age 65+).

About the Alabama Golf Association (AGA)

The Alabama Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization founded in 1915 whose mission is to serve and promote amateur golf in Alabama. AGA membership consists of over 130 member clubs represented by nearly 18,500 individuals. The activities and services of the Alabama Golf Association are governed by a Board of Directors consisting of Alabama golfers who wish to serve the game and the association through service.

AGA is the USGA's liaison for golf in Alabama conducting national championship qualifying, administering the USGA Handicap system including the GHIN Handicap service, course & slope rating and education. The AGA annually conducts 12 championships and team match competitions for men, women, juniors, and seniors. The AGA also conducts Alabama high school golf championships and assists with many collegiate events including the SEC Men's Golf Championship. In addition to competitions, the AGA administers the AGA Women's Scholarship Fund that is dedicated to assisting young female golfers in higher education and supports the Alabama Turfgrass Research Foundation.

Since 1980, the AGA has managed the affairs of the Southern Golf Association which includes conducting the Southern Amateur Championship and Southern Junior Championship, in conjunction with the Board of Directors of the Southern Golf Association.
