Lauren Gilchrist and Lauren Thompson Share Round 1 Lead of the 56th Alabama Girls State Junior Amateur Championship

Scottsboro, AL - First round results of the 56th Alabama Girls State Junior Amateur Championship of the Alabama Golf Association hosted by Goose Pond Colony Resort in Scottsboro, AL on Monday, June 24, 2019.

Playing the day in windy conditions, Lauren Gilchrist of Spanish Fort and Lauren Thompson of Midland City each fired a three-under 69 to share the lead after 18 holes.

“It was a solid and consistent day, I just had to play the wind,” Thompson said.

The only two players to break par for the day were the leaders.

Defending champion Michaela Morard of Huntsville carded an even 72 to stand third place.

Entries are open to any female amateur golfer who is a legal resident of Alabama, has an active GHIN® USGA Handicap Index® at an AGA member club and qualifies under the following age requirements:

  • 12-13 Age Division: Must have reached 12th birthday, but not 14th birthday, on or before June 24, 2019.
  • 14-15 Age Division: Must have reached 14th birthday, but not 16th birthday, on or before June 24, 2019.
  • 16-18 Age Division: Must have reached 16th birthday, but not 19th birthday, on or before June 24, 2019.

About the Alabama Golf Association (AGA)

The Alabama Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization founded in 1915 whose mission is to serve and promote amateur golf in Alabama. AGA membership consists of over 130 member clubs represented by nearly 18,000 individuals. The activities and services of the Alabama Golf Association are governed by a Board of Directors consisting of Alabama golfers who wish to serve the game and the association through service.

AGA is the USGA's liaison for golf in Alabama conducting national championship qualifying, administering the USGA Handicap system including the GHIN Handicap service, course & slope rating and education. The AGA annually conducts 19 championships and team match competitions for men, women, juniors, and seniors. The AGA also conducts Alabama high school golf championships and assists with many collegiate events including the SEC Men's Golf Championship. In addition to competitions, the AGA administers the AGA Women's Scholarship Fund that is dedicated to assisting young female golfers in higher education and supports the Alabama Turfgrass Research Foundation.

Since 1980, the AGA has managed the affairs of the Southern Golf Association which includes conducting the Southern Amateur Championship and Southern Junior Championship, in conjunction with the Board of Directors of the Southern Golf Association.
