Tyler Watts Shatters Youngest Champion Record at 107th Alabama State Amateur

Tyler Watts wins the 107th Alabama State Amateur by four strokes

MOBILE, AL (June 10, 2023) - Final round results of the 107th Alabama State Amateur Championship of the Alabama Golf Association hosted by the Country Club of Mobile in Mobile, AL, on Saturday, June 10, 2023.

Tyler Watts of Huntsville held onto his Round Two and Round Three lead all the way through the Final Round to claim the 107th Alabama State Amateur Championship title. At 15 years old, Watts is now the youngest player in history to claim the Alabama State Amateur Championship title. The previous record was held by Gordon Sargent, who won the 10th Alabama State Amateur Championship in 2020 at Saugahatchee Country Club (17 years old).
 
Watts concluded his performance this week with a 72 for the Final Round and a 267 (67, 62, 66, 72) overall.
 
“I think I finished pretty well,” said Watts. “#9 through #11 were tough stretches for me, but I got it done. It’s an honor to win.”
 
Carter Goodwin of Hoover and Ryley Heath of Decatur each carded a total nine-under 271 for the Championship. After a scorecard playoff, Goodwin received the silver medal (67, 71, 67, 66) and Heath claimed bronze (69, 66, 67, 69).

About the Alabama Golf Association (AGA)

Since 1980, the AGA has managed the affairs of the Southern Golf Association which includes conducting the Southern Amateur Championship and Southern Junior Championship, in conjunction with the Board of Directors of the Southern Golf Association.
