The defending champions, Tyler Watts of Huntsville + Barak Erwin of Huntsville had eight total birdies and an eagle today, firing a six-under 66 for the day and a 15-under 129 total. Watts and Erwin completed the championship’s 36-hole stroke play qualifying with a one-shot lead and will advance to match play as the 1st seed.
The side of Matt Gourgeot of Decatur + Stewart Whitt posted an overall score of 14-under 130 to finish solo second and advance to match play as the No.2 seed.
The cut to match play includes 16 teams (no ties) advancing to the Round of 16. The cut line fell at eight-under 136 and today’s round resulted in the following four teams tied for sixteenth place and the final two spots in the Round of 16:
- Eric Schugart of Huntsville + Patrick Butler of Huntsville
- Blair Hamm of Helena + Ethan Hagood of Vestavia Hills
- Clay Guerin of Hoover + Michael Brewer of Vestavia Hills
- Will Swift of Vestavia Hills + Woodie Eubanks of Oneonta
The Round of 16 will begin at 7:30 a.m. off #1. Quarterfinals will follow the Round of 16 in the afternoon.

About the Alabama Golf Association (AGA)
The Alabama Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization founded in 1915 whose mission is to serve and promote amateur golf in Alabama. AGA membership consists of 120 member clubs represented by over 30,000 individuals. In addition to competitions, the AGA administers the AGA Scholarship Fund through the Alabama Golf Foundation that is dedicated to assisting young golfers in higher education. Additionally, the Alabama Golf Foundation supports the Youth on Course Alabama program providing facility access to junior golfers and provides funding for the Alabama Turfgrass Research Foundation. In 2016, the AGA earned the Gold Tee Award for “Outstanding Tournament Operations – Small Association” by the International Association of Golf Administrators (IAGA).
Since 1980, the AGA has managed the affairs of the Southern Golf Association which includes conducting the historic Southern Amateur Championship and Southern Junior Championship, in conjunction with the Board of Directors of the Southern Golf Association.
