Groat & Pritchett Victorious at the 24th Alabama State Match Play & 5th State Senior Match Play Championships

FORT PAYNE, AL (August 10, 2025) – Final results of the Alabama Golf Association’s 24th Alabama State Match Play and 5th Alabama State Senior Match Play Championships hosted by Terrapin Hills Country Club in Fort Payne, Alabama, from August 7-10.

The 24th Alabama State Match Play and 5th Alabama State Senior Match Play Championships continued today as the semifinalists and finalists from each Championship battled this morning and afternoon.

JP Groat of Mentone secured the 24th Alabama State Match Play Championship title, winning 1 up against Jackson Mitchel of Athens in the final match.

Groat expressed that this tournament and win “has been one of the funnest, if not the funnest moments in my golf career so far.” 

Groat dedicated his home course win to his late father who recently passed away. 

Shaw Pritchett of Montgomery claimed the 5th Alabama State Senior Match Play Championship title, and his third Alabama State Senior Match Play Championship victory, winning 4 & 3 against Jeff Taylor of Montgomery in the final match.

The morning began with the semifinal matches at 7:30 a.m.

In the State Match Play semifinals, Jackson Mitchell defeated Logan Rawson of Elberta 2 & 1.

JP Groat defeated Jace Duckworth of Tuscaloosa in 19 holes.

In the State Senior Match Play semifinals, Jeff Taylor defeated Joseph Fortner of Birmingham 2 & 1.

Shaw Pritchett defeated Robbie Cotten of Brewton 3 & 2.

Final match contenders total holes played throughout the course of the tournament:
  • JP Groat played a total of 110 holes. 
  • Jackson Mitchel played a total of 106 holes.
  • Shaw Pritchett played a total of 100 holes.
  • Jeff Taylor played a total of 109 holes.

In 2016, the AGA earned the Gold Tee Award for “Outstanding Tournament Operations – Small Association” by the International Association of Golf Administrators (IAGA).

Since 1980, the AGA has managed the affairs of the Southern Golf Association which includes conducting the historic Southern Amateur Championship and Southern Junior Championship, in conjunction with the Board of Directors of the Southern Golf Association.
