Heading into the final round of the 29th Alabama State Senior Amateur Championship, Haymes Snedeker of Hoover was tied for first with 4-under par 136. Haymes began the final round taking big strides, quickly increasing his lead on the front-nine with birdies on hole #2, #8, and #9. Haymes completed the tournament 7-under par 203 (66, 70, 67).
When asked about the victory and what it means to him, Haymes shared “For my first senior event, this has been quite a spectacular three days. The course is fantastic, great to connect with guys, and it's been great to get it done down the stretch here in Mobile close to home ”
Robbie Cotten of Brewton, finished the tournament in second at five-under (60, 66, 69). Joseph Fortner of Birmingham and Richard Douglas of Birmingham finished T3 with an overall score of three-under 207. Fortner won in a scorecard playoff to take home third.
Robert Nelson of Fairhope ended the tournament at eight-under par 202 to claim the 8th State Super-Senior Champion title (65, 68, 69). Nelson started the tournament off hot with 5-under par 65 in the first round and followed that performance with a two-under par 68 in the second round. Nelson came into championship Sunday with a 7 stroke lead and started the front-nine with birdies on hole #2 & #9. Nelson finished his championship round shooting even-par on the back nine and finishing the day with one-under par 69.
When asked about what this win means he said, “It’s really really nice no matter what your age, to shoot three consecutive rounds in the sixties. It’s always great to win, but we’re here for the camaraderie and friendships built over the years and that's what matters the most in the end.”
Dusty Ellison of Wilsonville (71, 73, 70) and Stewart Alexander of Auburn (70, 70, 74) ended the tournament tied for second at four-over-par 214. Ellison won in a scorecard playoff to take home silver.
These Championships are conducted by the Alabama Golf Association.
About the Alabama Golf Association (AGA)
The Alabama Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational organization founded in 1915 whose mission is to serve and promote amateur golf in Alabama. AGA membership consists of 125 member clubs represented by over 33,500 individuals. In addition to competitions, the AGA administers the AGA Scholarship Fund through the Alabama Golf Foundation that is dedicated to assisting young golfers in higher education. Additionally, the Alabama Golf Foundation supports the Youth on Course Alabama program providing facility access to junior golfers and provides funding for the Alabama Turfgrass Research Foundation. In 2016, the AGA earned the Gold Tee Award for “Outstanding Tournament Operations – Small Association” by the International Association of Golf Administrators (IAGA).
Since 1980, the AGA has managed the affairs of the Southern Golf Association which includes conducting the historic Southern Amateur Championship and Southern Junior Championship, in conjunction with the Board of Directors of the Southern Golf Association.
