Gabriella Nicastro Claims 94th Women’s State Amateur & Virginia Grimes Secures 53rd Women’s State Senior Title

Gabriella Nicastro of Huntsville staged a final round rally to claim the 94th Alabama Women’s State Amateur title. 

After the conclusion of the final round, Courtney Grace of Birmingham (70,72,65) and Gabriella Nicastro of Huntsville (74,67,66) were tied for first, each posting nine-under par 207 overall. To determine a winner, a sudden death playoff took place on the eighteenth hole. 

Nicastro birdied the playoff hole, resulting in her claiming the 94th Women’s State Amateur Championship title. Courtney Grace ended the playoff to finish the championship in second. 

Nicastro's win earned her a spot in the 126th U.S . Women’s Amateur held at The Honors Course in Ooltewah, Tennessee, August 4-9, 2026. 

“The back nine today, I was down with a few left to play. I really had to make a move and I did, we were tied after 18. Then we went to an epic playoff, and it was pretty sweet to win with a birdie on the final hole.” 

Kamdyn Kelly of Dothan finished in third with an overall score of three-under par 213 (72, 70, 71).

In the Alabama Women’s State Senior Championship, Virginia Grimes of Auburn finished seven-over par 223 (73, 77, 73) to claim the title for the second consecutive time. 

After the win, Grimes expressed that “winning back-to-back titles is pretty special to me….really had to earn it this week on such a tough course”.

Linda Jeffery of Prattville took home second with an overall score of 227 (75, 76, 76) and Susan West of Tuscaloosa took home third with an overall score of 229 (81, 74, 74). 

In the First Flight of the Alabama Women’s State Senior Amateur Tournament Division, Kyung-Hwa Theodoss of Hampton Cove claimed first with an overall score of 247. Dawn Miceli of Foley took first runner-up with an overall score of 257. 

Jana Hudson of Baileyton took home gold in the Second Flight of the Alabama Women’s State Senior Amateur Tournament Division. Keri Rutledge of Birmingham shot a total of 275 to take first runner-up. 

These Championships are conducted by the Alabama Golf Association.

Since 1980, the AGA has managed the affairs of the Southern Golf Association which includes conducting the historic Southern Amateur Championship and Southern Junior Championship, in conjunction with the Board of Directors of the Southern Golf Association.
